Preface of the Special Issue: The Joy of Mechanics

Throughout his career, Paul Steinmann has made significant

contributions to the field of Mechanics. His passion for
Mechanics and his unwavering optimism have enthused and
motivated those who have studied his works or have been
fortunate enough to collaborate with him. It is a pleasure to
dedicate this Special Issue, aptly titled “The Joy of Mechanics”,
of the European Journal of Mechanics; A/Solids to Paul on the
occasion of his 60th birthday.

Paul is the Director of the Institute of Applied Mechanics at the

Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU),
Germany and the Co-Director of the Glasgow Computational
Engineering Centre (GCEC) at the University of Glasgow, United
Kingdom. He is also the speaker of the German Research
Foundation (DFG) research training group “Fracture across
scales: integrating mechanics, materials science, mathematics, chemistry, and physics
(FRASCAL)”. He has been the Officer for Strategic Development at FAU since 2020. Paul has
received several awards for his outstanding research. These include the Fellow Awards from
the International Association for Computational Mechanics and the European Mechanics
Society (2006), the Timoshenko Visiting Scholar Award from Stanford University (2007), the
ERC Advanced Grant (2011, 2023) and the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award
(2017). Paul has published over 400 contributions in leading journals and is the author of 3
monographs and 2 edited volumes.

Paul is an extraordinary teacher and supervisor having mentored more than 50 PhD students
and 25 postdoctoral researchers including 5 Habilitations. Over 20 of his former PhD students
and postdoctoral researchers have become full Faculty Members at various leading
Universities. Moreover, Paul’s knowledge, enthusiasm and positive approach have led to
multiple collaborations from all the different branches of Mechanics.

Paul’s former students and collaborators honoured him on the occasion of his 60th birthday
with the Symposium “The Joy of Mechanics” held at Chalmers University, Sweden in August
2022. The authors of the 17 papers contained in this Special Issue are all Paul’s former
students, postdoctoral researchers, and research collaborators who have worked with him
over the last 25 years. The diversity of the contributions is a testament to the richness of
Mechanics and Paul’s significant contribution to the field.

Congratulations Paul!
