1 A Read about the qualities people need to do their jobs. Which jobs do you think they are talking about?

“Winning is the most important thing for me. I've always been competitive, so I love my job. I think I'm a good
leader. It's important that all the players know what they're doing and it's my job to tell them. The decisions I
make are important for the whole team, so I can't be indecisive.”

“I have classes of 80 to 100 children so I have to be hard-working. I do my best, because education is so

important for the children. You need to be a good communicator in my job, so that you can get the children
interested in what they have to learn. Often, we don't have very many resources, so we also need to be creative
and be able to think outside the box.”

“I'm a risk taker, so starting my own business wasn't difficult for me. I've always been very motivated and
ambitious. I start work at 4.30a.m. every day. I don't enjoy sleep. You can't afford to be lazy if you want to

READING

2 A Which of the personal qualities discussed in Exercise 1 do you think are qualities you need to become a
millionaire?

B Are the statements 1-6 about millionaires true (T) or false (F)?

1 Most millionaires are born rich.

2 Millionaires think that money is more important than love or marriage.

3 They work more than sixty hours a week. 4 They don't like to work when they're on holiday.

5 They do well at school and usually go to university.

6 They like spending money on designer goods.

C Read the article and check your answers.

You don't have to be born rich to be a millionaire

So you want to be a millionaire, but have you got what it takes? To find out what
millionaires are really like and what motivates them, the BBC programme Mind of a
Millionaire did a survey. Psychologists looked at self-made millionaires to try
and understand what qualities are needed to make a million. So, what is really
important to a millionaire

The answer, not surprisingly, is money. money and more money. Money is more
important than love or marriage. And if you give a millionaire money, they won't
spend it, they'll invest it to make more money. But you don't have to be born no
to be a millionaire. Most millionaires com from relatively poor backgrounds. And
you don't have to work hard at school either. A lot of successful entrepreneurs
were lazy at school and didn't get good results. However, you must have a clear
idea of what you want to do (get rich) and you really ought to start early. A lot
of millionaires left school early, to start their own businesses.

If you want to be a millionaire, not only do you have to work hard, but you
should enjoy your work. And you shouldn't take too many holidays. Most
millionaires work more than sixty hours a week. Half stay in contact with the
office while they're on holiday and fourteen percent of them refuse to switch off.
Having a good work-life balance is fine for people who only want to be moderately
successful, but if you're really ambitious, you have to put in the hours.
What are millionaires like as people? The survey found that they are competitive,
they like taking risks, and they are aggressive and self-confident. They'll do
anything they can to get what they want.

Millionaires can break all sorts of rules. The only thing they mustn't do is break
the law. Surprisingly, most millionaires are careful spenders. They prefer Gap to
Gucci. Many of them choose not to spend money on expensive designer clothes they
would rather find a bargain on the high street. And they don't spend lots of money
on expensive meals in restaurants either. They prefer to eat at home. However,
they do like to drive Mercedes and go on at least three expensive holidays a year.
One last thing: millionaires don't care what other people think of them. So, if
you want to be a millionaire, you shouldn't worry about what other people think of
you. Just do your own thing!

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences

Lead In:

The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at
Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too

LEARNING FROM MISTAKES

LEAD IN:

How often do you make mistakes?

Have you ever made a mistake and learnt something about it?

1-READING

a- The following article is about mistakes that somehow work…

MISTAKES THAT WORK!

People who don't make mistakes are unlikely to learn anything. The best way to learn
something is to make mistakes first. Thomas Edison, who invented the light bulb, told
his colleagues: 'Of the 200 light bulbs that didn't work, every failure told me something
I was able to incorporate into the next attempt.' Benjamin Franklin, the US statesman
and scientist, once said: 'I haven't failed; I have had 10,000 ideas that didn't work.'

Both these people understood that failures and false starts are the condition of
success. In fact a surprising number of everyday objects had their beginnings in a
mistake or a misunderstanding. Post-it notes, packets of crisps and even bread are all
unexpected inventions. In 2600 B.C., Bread was invented by a tired Egyptian slave when
the dough rose during his sleep. And crisps were first cooked by a chef in the USA
when a customer complained that his fried potatoes were not thin enough.

Big, expensive mistakes are often made by successful business people every day. When
an employee of IBM made a mistake that cost the company $600,000, Thomas Watson,
the chairman, was asked if he would fire the man. Of course not,' he replied. 'I have
just spent $600,000 training him. I am not going to let another company benefit from
his experience.'

The important thing to remember is that you need to learn from your mistakes. If you
don't, then there is no sense in making them.
b- Now cover the article and complete the sentences using your own words.

1- According to the article, the best way to learn something is to __ _____________mistakes first.

2- Thomas Edison invented the________________________ , but first he made a lot of

______________________

3- Post-it notes, bread and packets of crisps were all unexpected ___________________

4- An Egyptian slave invented bread by going to______________________

5- Crisps were invented by an American chef because a_______________________

complained that his fried potatoes were not ________________enough.

6- An employee at IBM made a mistake which ________________the company $600,000. However, his
boss decided ___________________to fire him because he now had lots of
_________________________________

7- The important thing to remember is to _ ____________________________ from your mistakes.

LANGUAGE ANALYSIS: PASSIVE VOICE

Study these examples :

*Big, expensive mistakes are made every day by successful business people.

*Bread was invented by a tired Egyptian slave.

*Crisps were first cooked by an American cook.

There are two types of sentences: ACTIVE or PASSIVE sentences. Active voice means
that a sentence has a subject that acts upon its verb. Passive voice means that a
subject is a recipient of a verb's action.

The sentences given before are examples of passive voice. As you can see, the passive
voice is used to focus attention on the person or thing affected by the action.

EDUCATION IN BRITAIN

INTRODUCTION
A
School in the UK is compulsory between the ages of five and sixteen. Children
younger than five can go to a toddler group (accompanied by a parent), playgroup

s
or nursery school.

Compulsory schooling begins at the age of five. Pupils first attend primary school, which lasts for six years.
Often primary school in the UK is divided into infant school (the first two years) and junior school (the
following 4 years).

After primary school, students go to secondary school until they are sixteen (practical emphasis) or 18

k
(secondary school with 6th form - academic emphasis).

The school year consists of three terms. Students have about 12-13 weeks of holiday per school year.

1- Watch the video and fill in the gaps:
1. Full time education in the UK is compulsory between the ages of __________ and __________.

2. ________ of children receive free education, ________ attend private schools.

3. Except for __________, state schools in Britain follow a national curriculum.

2- Now, answer these questions about the video.

1. What is the average number of students in class at primary/secondary schools?

2. What do children study at primary/secondary schools?

3. What type of school is called a boarding school?

4. What are the three core subjects?

5. When do students take national exams in these subjects?

6. What is the difference between GCSE exams (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and “A”
levels exams?

7. How many students go on to higher education?

8. Some students enter a university and some do vocational training. What do you think it this is?

9. What is tuition?

3- READ ABOUT GRADING SCALES, DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AND UNIFORMS IN THE UK.

a- Grading Scale
In the UK (as in other English speaking countries) letter grades are used in reports.

A > 80% (excellent)

B > 70% (very good)

C > 60% (improvement needed)

D > 50% (close fail)

E > 40% (fail)

F < 40% (fail)

In general, only grades A to C are a 'pass'. Still, in the UK no student has to repeat a year – weak students can
take extra lessons at school.

b- Different Kinds of Schools

Most students in the UK are enrolled in state funded schools. These are financed through taxes, so parents do
not have to pay for their children's education. But there are also numerous private schools, also known as
independent schools, where education is not free of charge.

Students can choose to attend a co-educational school or a single sex school.

c- School Uniforms
It is common for students in the UK to wear school uniforms. They consist of:

● blazer or sweater with school logo

● shirt and tie or polo shirt / t-shirt
● dark trousers or dark skirt
● black shoes
At some schools, students are required to wear a shirt and a tie; other schools only require a t-shirt or
sweater. The colour of the uniform also depends on the school – blazer, sweater, trousers and skirt are usually
blue, grey, green or brown.

TOP UNIVERSITIES
Lead in:

What are the most prestigious universities in the world?

1- OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE : Read the text given below. Match the
headings (A-F) with parts (1-6) of the text.

A - The first students

B - Staying at the universities

C - No married teachers

D- An exciting competition

E - Woman students

F - Ancient universities

1____

The towns of Oxford and Cambridge have some of the finest buildings in Britain. They are famous for their
universities, the oldest in England. All the students live and study in colleges. Cambridge has 31 colleges and
Oxford has 39. Oxford’s first college started in 1249. Cambridge’s first college opened in 1281.

2____

Before the 12th century, people who wanted a good education went to the Sorbonne in Paris. Then, in 1167,
all English students in Paris moved to Oxford. Some people say King Henry II told them to move. Others say the
French threw them out! The students went to study in Oxford monasteries and that was the beginning of
Oxford University.

3____

The Church was very important in Oxford and Cambridge for many years. For example, until the 19th century
the university teachers were almost like priests and they couldn’t marry.

4 ____
Women started studying later than men. The first women’s college at Cambridge opened in 1869 and at
Oxford in 1878. Today, three Cambridge colleges and one Oxford college are for women only. Men and women
study together in the others.

5_________

Every year the universities compete in a rowing race over 7 kilometres of the Thames. The first race was in
1829 and it became a yearly race in 1839. All the students really want their university to win!

6______

People can stay in rooms at Oxford and Cambridge when the students are on holiday. Some rooms are modern
but the older rooms are more interesting (and more uncomfortable). They often have low ceilings, small
windows and a view of the square in the middle of the college. Imagine sleeping in the same room as an ex-
Prime Minister or eating at the same table as Lawrence of Arabia!

4- What does student three think is the advantage of the college structure?

5- Student four is working hard studying management studies for one year on a very intense course.
What helps him get through the year?

6- What is the expression which applies to Cambridge according to one of towns people?
7- What are some of the high tech subjects taught at the new colleges?

8- What is the name of the river that flows through Cambridge?

9- What else is there apart from the work for students in ?

10- The narrator ends by saying that Cambridge still has the same purpose as it did
centuries ago? What is this?

a- What is the oldest university in our country?

b- Are any of the university colleges in your country for males or females only?
Do you think they are a good idea?

c- Why is it a good idea for students to have enough free time?
