PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT AND DEVELOPING AND USING RUBRICS FOR NON-
TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT
When it comes to students learnings, we teachers should select the assessment
that may lead to the students growth and development. One best assessment to be used is the portfolio assessment in which it is more authentic and performance-based. It tests what is really happening in the classroom. It also encourage the students to give their best to showcase their skills, talents and knowledge on a particular portfolio. To come up with the best output, teachers must first set rubrics in order for the students to be guided in accomplishing the said tasks. Students also learn to manage their expectations on that performance task. Though there are rubrics that are difficult to critic, it is really a challenge for them as a student. When we say portfolio assessment, it is the substitute to the pen-and-paper objective test as an approach to assessing students’ learning. It allows teachers to reflect on the effectiveness of their instruction. It also provides teachers freedom of gaining insights into the student’s development or achievement over a period of time. In doing so, students should be guided by different principles. There is also a process wherein we should follow. After the students made their portfolio, it will be asess using a rubric. The rubrics specified should contain the essential features. It will be evaluated by the teachers, peers and the parents of the students. This assessment is really significant to us teachers because we assess in what points do we have to improve. Also students reflect and have responsibility of their own learning. To sum up everything, this portfolio plays a big role on the education system because it makes our duties and responsibilities more convenient and efficient. By using the rubrics, we can also determine students who had given so much effort and excel on that certain performance tasks. Not only that, but also we can determine students that needs for improvement. In that way, students and teachers benefit each other in that learning process.
