CH202L (Fluid & Particle Mechanics)

1. Air flows parallel to a speed limit sign along the highway at speed V = 8.5 m/s.
The temperature of the air is 25°C, and the width W of the sign parallel to the
flow direction (i.e., its length) is 0.45 m. Is the boundary layer on the sign
laminar or turbulent or transitional?

2. A horizontal circular pipe of outer radius R1, is placed concentrically inside another
circular pipe of inner radius R2. Considering fully developed laminar flow in the
annular space between pipes and find out the radius Ro where maximum velocity
occurs.

3. Consider the water siphon shown in Fig. Assuming that Bernoulli’s equation is valid.
Find an expression for the velocity V2 exiting the siphon tube.
Assume the tank diameter is very high.

4. For a steady, fully developed laminar flow through a duct, the pressure drop per
unit length of the duct Δp/L is constant in the direction of flow and depends on
the average flow velocity V, the hydraulic diameter of the duct Dh, the density
ρ, and the viscosity µ, of the fluid. Find out the pertinent dimensionless groups
governing the problem by the use of Buckingham’s Π theorem.

5. A coal-water slurry has a specific gravity of 1.3. If the specific gravity of

coal is 1.65, what is the weight percent of coal in the slurry? What is the
volume percent coal?
6. A suspension in water of uniformly sized spheres of diameter 90 μm and
density 1100 kg/m3 has a solids volume fraction of 0.2. The suspension
settles to a bed of solids volume fraction 0.5. (For water: density, 1000
kg/m3 and viscosity, 0.001 Pas) The single particle terminal velocity of the
spheres in water may be taken as 0.44 mm/s.

Calculate:
a) The velocity at which the clear water/suspension interface settles;
b) The velocity at which the sediment/suspension interface rises.
