1. A i m
Having premised that the indication to use a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE – both individual and
collective) comes from the activity of Risk Assessment, the aim of this procedure is to:
• identify and regulate the choice and management of PPEs
• regulate the assignment, collection, keeping, and real use of the PPEs for the GE staff and, at the
same time, guarantee the use in compliance with the legislation in force.
For each site, according to the specific working conditions, number and types of PPEs are foreseen.
2. A p pl i c a t i on F i e l d
The procedure is applied to the process of identification and management of PPEs.
3. O pe r at i n g P ro c e d ure s
Each worker is obliged to:
• wear and use appropriately during the working hours the PPE foreseen for the activities, according
to the GE rules in compliance with the safety and risk prevention regulation in force;
• do not remove or modify the devices and other safety and protection means with previous
authorisation;
• immediately inform the GE Site Manager, the Resource Manager or EHS/SER about the lacks of the
safety - protection devices and means, as well as other possible hazardous situations he/she could
know, taking direct actions to eliminate or reduce these lacks or hazard, within his competencies
and possibilities;
• take care of the cleaning and good preservation of the PPE supplied, check their status before
wearing them and make sure the size is appropriate.
The GE Site Manager is obliged to control the efficiency of the protection means supplied for the Site and
their preservation, besides making sure the PPEs are correctly used by the workers. Moreover, he is
responsible for providing the occasional visitors with the necessary PPE, if they are not equipped with them.
EHS/SER is responsible for:
• defining, on the basis of the risk analysis, which PPEs have to be used for the activities on site and
inform, also through the Safety Plan, the Resource Manager/PM/PM2 about them;
• assessing and approving the PPE to be used, on the basis of their technical sheet;
• gathering the indications given by the PPE users;
• check the compliance of the device with the regulatory standards(in case of new devices he can
ask for a sample to the Sourcing Department or directly to the supplier in order to check the
effectiveness, providing a technical specification).
In case of risk assessments that concern health problems, he has to collaborate with the Competent
Doctor.
The EHS/SER works together with the Competent Doctor and the RLS to analyse the outcomes of the PPE
tests carried out.
If the risk assessment, the accidental analysis and/or specific requests/needs of the client require the
adoption of a new PPE, the assessment of a new PPE is carried out by assigning it to a limited number of
users (10) for a coherent period of time.
All the information related to the single PPE (category, requirements, necessary documents for the filing
and type of E/T/I necessary), is drawn up and updated by the EHS/SER and transferred to the staff working
in the sites.
The FSEs (Field Service Engineers) are equipped by their SM (Service Managers) with the initial PPEs
standard that includes:
• safety helmet, compliant with UNI EN 397;
• a pair of safety shoes, compliant with UNI EN 345;
• two work overalls;
• a pair of safety glasses with graded lens, compliant with UNI EN 166, in case the FSE needs them;
• anti-noise headset or ear plugs compliant with UNI EN 352.
As concerns the necessary PPE for site-specific activities, the EHS/SER informs the PM2 (Installation
Manager/Field Coordinator) about the necessary PPE equipment, divided into uniform groups, on the basis
of the peculiarity of the site.
The PM2, by matching these data with the matrix for the belonging of the staff to the different uniform
groups, indicates the necessary PPEs. The FSE is responsible for going to the warehouse and collect the
necessary PPE, filling in the request form (ref. EHS-PG.003.Frm01), which has to be signed by FSE’s
supervisor and approved by the EHS/SER.
The need to modify the PPE equipment during the activities on site is coordinated by the GE Site Manager.
3.4 Training
The training with regard to PPEs, carried out in collaboration with the EHS/SER, is included in the training
programme developed in compliance with the Training Management procedure that defines the standard
process for the storage of the related documents.
In the E/T/I forms both for new employees and for the re training of the staff, the EHS/SER is responsible for
organising E/T/I section specific for PPE addressing individual roles or departments, on the basis of the
related risk.
When a third – category PPE is introduced, it is mandatory to train all the staff that is supposed to use it.
Equally when a person, changing his/her task, is equipped with a third-category PPE, it is mandatory to
train him/her.
EHS/SER organises specific training sections, planned on the Training Matrix and duly registered (See
Training Procedure).
4. A n n u al A s se ss me n t of t h e P ro c e d u re
The effectiveness of the procedure is assessed every year and whenever necessary.
The procedure is discussed every year at the EHS Committee meetings that analyze the points of strength
and weakness of the procedure as well as the results of the Corrective and Preventive actions, also taken in
the case of Non-conformities. The needs resulting from the assessment will be considered as the starting
point for a revision of the health and safety objectives.
The results of the annual assessment are used to update the procedure.
Any non-conformities are entered into the online system Gensuite and monitored until they are closed.
