1. Description and Operation

A. Description

The sensing element, Figure 1, has an Inconel sheath that contains two electrical
conductors in a thermistor material. One conductor is welded to the terminal lug
ring. The other is the ground conductor and is welded to the shell of the sensing
element.

Sensing Element
Figure 1
B. Theory of Operation

The thermistor material decreases in resistance as its temperature increases. At

the usual ambient temperatures, the resistance of the sensing element is high.
The resistance decreases quickly as the sensing element is heated. The resis-
tance will continue to decrease as the ambient temperature increases. When the
resistance value agrees with the alarm temperature, the related detection circuit
will give an alarm signal.

B. Preparation for Test

1. Let the temperature of the sensing element become stable at ambient room
temperature. Write the ambient temperature.
C. Functional Tests

1. Continuity and Short Test

The continuity test measures the maximum resistance between each termi-
nal lug for each sensing element shown in Table 1, Specified Data. Replace
a sensing element that has more resistance than the specified value.
a. Connect the ohmmeter test leads to the sensing-element terminal lug at
each end of the sensing element.

b. Measure the continuity resistance of the sensing element and make sure
the resistance is at or lower than the specified maximum resistance
shown in Table 1.

c. Connect the ohmmeter test leads to the sensing-element terminal lug

and sensing element shell. If a short is shown, replace the sensing ele-
ment.

2. Insulation Resistance Test

The insulation resistance test measures the resistance between the conduc-
tor that is not grounded and the grounded conductor of the sensing element.
Refer to Table 3, Minimum Insulation Resistance. Replace a sensing ele-
ment that has a lower resistance than that given.
a. Connect the negative megohmmeter lead to the sensing element shell.
See Figure 2.

Insulation Resistance Test Setup

b. Connect the positive megohmmeter lead to one of the two sensing-ele-
ment terminal lugs.

c. Apply the applicable voltage given in Table 3 to the sensing element.

d. Monitor the megohmmeter indication during the test. The resistance

value must not be more than that given in Table 3.

3. Automatic Test Requirements (ATLAS)

A. Not Applicable.

4. Disassembly

A. Remove the nuts, screws, and washers from the terminal lug ends to disassem-
ble the sensing elements. Keep the nuts, screws and washers for assembly.

5. Cleaning

A. No special cleaning is necessary.

6. Check

A. Visually examine the sensing elements for deep abrasions or cuts. Replace cut
sensing elements or sensing elements that have thermistor material that you can
see.

B. Visually examine the sensing elements for signs of wear. If wear is found, put the
sensing element in position so that it will not touch adjacent components.

C. Visually examine the sensing elements to make sure that they have not been
twisted. If damage is shown, replace the sensing element.

D. Visually examine the sensing element terminal lugs for contamination; clean as
necessary.

E. Examine the ceramic portion of the terminal lugs. Make sure that the terminal
lugs are correctly attached. If the terminal lugs are loose or damaged, replace the
sensing element.
