Installing Ferrite Beads


with "Wired" MEDIA Cards
Cautions and Warnings DO NOT INSTALL ANY SIMPLEX PRODUCT THAT APPEARS
DAMAGED. Upon unpacking your Simplex product, inspect the contents of
the carton for shipping damage. If damage is apparent, immediately file a
claim with the carrier and notify Simplex.
ELECTRICAL HAZARD - Disconnect electrical power when making any
internal adjustments or repairs. Servicing should be performed by qualified
Simplex Representatives.

STATIC HAZARD - Static electricity can damage components. Therefore,


handle as follows:
1. Ground yourself before opening or installing components (use the 553-484
Static Control Kit).
2. Keep uninstalled component wrapped in anti-static material at all times.

Overview This publication shows how to install ferrite beads into the “Wired” MEDIA
Cards of the 4020, 4100+/4120 Network, and the Network Processing Unit
(NPU). A ferrite bead (supplied in the shipping group) is required to reduce
radiated emissions for each “Wired” MEDIA card.

4020 “Wired” MEDIA Card Follow Steps 1 through 8 and refer to Figure 1 to install a ferrite bead on each
twisted-pair.

WARNING: Ensure that all AC and battery power to the Fire


Alarm Control Panel is disconnected at this time.

1. Open the display door of the Master Controller.


2. Strip the outer jacket from each twisted-pair close to the back box
knockout.
3. Separate the shield wire from the twisted-pair wires.
4. Loop the twisted-pair ONLY through its own ferrite bead. See (A) in
Figure 1.
• Repeat for second twisted-pair.
5. Place a cable tie above and below each ferrite bead. See (A) in Figure 1.
6. Wrap the shield wire (left port only) around the Green ground screw and
tighten. See (B) in Figure 1.
7. Clip the shield wire on the right port close to the jacket.
8. Terminate the twisted-pair wires to TB2-2 and TB2-3 (left port) and TB2-7
and TB2-8 (right port) on the PC Board.

4100+/4120 Network “Wired” Follow Steps 1 through 8 and refer to Figure 2 to mount ferrite beads (supplied
MEDIA Cards in the shipping group) when the Network “Wired” MEDIA Cards are installed
in the 4100+/4120 product lines.

WARNING: Ensure that all AC and battery power to the Fire


Alarm Control Panel is disconnected at this time.

1. Open the display door of the Master Controller.


2. Strip the outer jacket from each twisted-pair close to the back box
knockout.
3. Separate the shield wire from the twisted-pair wires.
4. Loop the twisted-pair ONLY through its own ferrite bead. See (A) in
Figure 2.
• Repeat for second twisted-pair
5. Place a cable tie above and below the ferrite bead. See (A) in Figure 2.
6. Terminate the twisted-pair wires to TB1-6 and TB1-8 (right port) and
TB2-1 and TB2-3 (left port).
7. Attach the shield wire (left port only) to TB2-4.
8. Clip the shield wire on the right port close to the outer jacket.

the 4100 Option Bay or the Master Controller Bay

Network Processing Unit Follow Steps 1 through 8 and refer to Figure 3 to mount ferrite beads (supplied
(NPU) “Wired” Media Cards in the shipping group) when the Network “Wired” MEDIA Cards are installed
in the NPU.

WARNING: Ensure that all AC and battery power to the Fire


Alarm Control Panel is disconnected at this time.

1. Open the display door of the Master Controller.


2. Strip the outer jacket from each twisted-pair close to the back box
knockout.
3. Separate the shield wire from the twisted-pair wires.
4. Loop the twisted-pair ONLY through its own ferrite bead. See (A) in
Figure 3.
• Repeat for the second twisted-pair.
5. Place the cable tie above and below the ferrite bead. See (A) in Figure 3.
6. Terminate the twisted-pair wires to the terminal block connectors TB1-1
and TB1-2 for both ports. See (B) in Figure 3.
7. Wrap the shield wire (left port only) around the Green ground screw and
tighten.
8. Clip the shield wire on the right port close to the outer jacket.
