HE Grand Lodge of England was formed in 1 7 1 7 ,

till 1 7 2 1 ; up to which time the F reemasons had b e en
so inconspicuous that the re are not known to e x ist m o re
than fifteen distinct references to them in print of an
earlier date These are collected in the appendix to the
.

Inaugural Ad dress of M r: E H Dring which he delivered . .

to the Q uatuor Coronati Lodg e in 1 9 1 2 ( to wh ich the

present article is ve ry much indeb ted ) and of them only ,

three can be said to be anything more than passing re ferences

to the Craft and its customs .

I t was not till 1 7 22 that any work was printed which

can fairly b e describ ed as a work on Freemasonry T h is .

was the p amphlet known to day as the R oberts Con stitutions

The Freemasons had possessed in manuscript ever si nce ,

the fi f teenth century at all events documents containing ,

what p urp orted to be a h istory of the Order and a set ,

actually made in the fi f teenth sixteenth and s eventeenth

,

c enturies have come down to us to da y and of these there ,

are nearly a hundred in existence They are known as the Old .

Charg es and the v ersions are almost all so closely allied

textuall y as to make it obvious that they derive from a
