The stone-age whale hunters who kill with their bare hands

In Lamalera, a group of skilled fishermen using only their bodies and extraordinary bravery
to catch 75ft long sperm whales to provide enough food and materials for their whole village.
This amazing whale hunt is one of the last traditional methods to fish for one of the largest
creatures in the seas. They battle for more than six hours, their hands gripping traditional
flensing knives, to spear the whale which they call koteklema. The fishermen of Lamalera (a
village perched on the southern part of Lembata Island, Nusa Tenggara Timur Province,
Indonesia) kill their prey with their bare hands.

To hunt the whale, the fishermen use traditional boat. The sails of the wooden boats are
woven from gebang leaves and each vessel is hand-made, with no nails or metal parts. Ropes
are made from palm leaves and waru wood fibers, coiled together. There is no other
equipment, apart from the centuries-old rituals of whale-hunting passed down through the
generations.

During the sea season, from May to October, the villagers hunt whales, sharks and dolphins.
In hunting the whale, the fishermen work as a team the leader of the team called Lamafa
(boat captains). When there is a whale, the team direct the boat to chase the whale. The
Lamafa leaps from the boat holding a 'kefa' (a bamboo pole with a sharp iron-blade) which he
uses to pierce the whale before swimming back to collect another pole. The tiny boats,
dwarfed by the bulk of a whale, risk being pulled under with every lurch of its huge tail.
With a swing of its huge tail, a sperm whale can knock a fisherman unconscious and it may
break the boat.

Moving faster than a jet-ski, the whale drags the boats through the water, writhing as kefa are
thrust into its flesh. The whale blubber is at least a foot thick and it takes a great effort to
reach the tender flesh underneath. More boats from other village clans will join in the
desperate effort.

As the whale die, it is dragged to the shore and applause breaks out over the boats along with
jubilant shouts of 'Hirkae!'. It may seem a cruel way to hunt, but Lamafa Korolus says: "We
have no other choice, we need koteklema to live." The Lamafa got the first cuts of the whale.
The rest of the cuts of meat are then distributed among the elderly and poor of the village in
the belief that harmony within the community will ensure future catches.
