REACTION PAPER NO.: 2
TITLE OF REPORT: PHILOSOPHY AND CONCEPTS OF COOPERATIVE
EDUCATION
REPORTED BY: MS. ELOISA LAQUIAN

The reporter presented well the topics under the PHILOSOPHY AND

CONCEPTS OF COOPERATIVE EDUCATION. She expounded it well and had given

relatable examples and scenarios during her own experience on her internship in

college.

To summarize what I have understood, Cooperative education is a structured

educational strategy integrating classroom studies with learning through productive

work experiences in a field related to a student's academic or career goals. It provides

progressive experiences in integrating theory and practice. Co-op is a partnership

among students, educational institutions and employers, with specified responsibilities

for each party. The presenter also mentioned about the models of Cooperative

Education – the Alternate semesters and Parallel method, which are individually

designed on the convenience of the students so that they can cope with the design of

their internship program. Lastly she discussed that in order for a Cooperative Education

Program to be successful it should be student-centered; fosters self-directed and

transformational learning; integrates school and work learning experiences; school and

work learning experiences are relevant and meaningful to life-long learning; and interns

should gain knowledge on new trends and advanced technologies used in the actual

work field.

QUESTION 1: EXPLAIN THE OBJECTIVES OF INTERNSHIP AND COOPERATIVE

PROGRAMS.

A. Explore career alternatives prior to graduation

Internship helps students on their career exploration, wherein it is the first

thing that you do after you have a better idea of your personality, values, skills

and interests. It involves purposefully looking through a list of careers that match

you well and performing some research to see exactly what that career path

entails.

B. Assess interests and abilities in their field of study

Through an internship, a student can do a lot of research about their

final career choices, but the best insight into their options will probably come

from those who are already employed in the field. Reaching out to those in

the professional network—or their professors in college—and ask if they know

anyone they can get in touch with who would be willing to talk to them about

their experience.

C. Develop work habits and attitudes necessary for job success

Speaking to the experts in the field and ask if there are any

opportunities to shadow them and their team for a day. By getting involved in

the workplace, an intern can gain valuable insight into a career workday while

also getting a potential referral after the internship.

D. Develop communication, interpersonal and other critical skills

As a fresh face within an organisation, an intern is on a ideal position to

observe and learn. Suggest to your supervisor that at the mid-way point of your

internship you would like to give a short presentation of the new skills you have

learnt or projects you have worked on. Not only will this demonstrate your

initiative and enthusiasm for the role but you will have the ideal opportunity to

practice your presentation skills. Don’t wait for feedback to be given to you by

your manager. Actively seek feedback from your peers to ensure you are

constantly learning and improving your communication skills.

E. Acquire employment contacts leading directly to a full-time job following

graduation from college

For most of the graduating students who have undergone internship, it is a

stepping-stone to bonus opportunities within the same organisation, including a

full-time job. The more people you meet in the professional world with the same

interest, the higher your chances to grow as a professional. You will get to know

how these people work, what strategies they use to tackle a difficult situation,

and how they get the job done. Different people have different skills. Meeting

them and watching them work will help you understand how to work with different

people and in various work environments. You can use their strategies and

reinvent them for your circumstances.

QUESTION 2: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVES OF

PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND;
There are lots of PROs and CONs on the objectives of the internship in Public

Administration. Most interns in Public Admin render their practicum on government

offices.

PROS:

 Government internships are open all year round, thus this means that

aspiring interns don’t have to wait for months to become one. They have the

freedom to start their internship during the vacation or while the classes are still

going on.

 Government internships allow you to work with brilliant people, including

high-ranking government officials.

During the internship in Public Administration, students will meet brilliant

personalities that they can talk about politics, economics or it’s even possible that

they’ll be inspired to become a government employee in the future.

 Government internships expose you to the realities of life.

This could be considered as Con too. During the internship, you will meet people

from all walks of life. They will encounter complaints and political issues that will

stretch out their understanding of the government. There will be times that the

intern might be confused when they step into an office with unattractive interiors

and broken electric fans. Conducting programs in marginalized areas and

witness the life of the locals, but one thing is for sure, public administration

internships will be an eye-opening experience that may be the way and an

opportunity to unleash the inner leader and inspire these young minds to

continue serving people.

CONS:

 Expect a heavy workload

Unfortunately, this set-up could be tiring for some students. They might

experience burnout if they attend classes while pursuing their internship at the

same time. Knowing that government work entails service and long working

hours, they should have to think about it twice

 Interns may feel extreme pressure and responsibility

Based on my observation our previous interns, they easily get burned out due to

the heavy workloads since our division is under staffed. And due to the need for

an efficient and reliable system, they are also expected to work at the same pace

just like everyone else.

2.1 ENGINEERING
An engineering internship is also an opportunity to see how classroom and

textbook learning applies to the real world. It can help the interns connect the dots

between theory and practical work experience. For example, because engineering

disciplines rely heavily on math and science, an internship can help them

understand how these subjects apply to the job, such as when they land an

assignment where they must calculate production rates or interpret analytical

laboratory data. They will be able to observe how full-time engineers apply

knowledge to handle real work situations. Engineering internships can also get

them relevant work experience, helping them become workforce ready before

entering the job market as a graduate. Many employers give higher consideration

to entry-level engineers who have experience. Additionally, intern work prepares

them for the demands of a full-time job. The goal is to develop a good work history

with positive references before they graduate.

2.2 EDUCATION

The goals of the internship in education are to help the students to connect theory to

practice and to develop a broad view of the aims of education and the profession of teaching.

The intern teaching experience should help the pre-service teacher develop the ability to

apply previously acquired principles of instruction in teaching students of differing abilities and

backgrounds to reach desired goals; understanding of the mental, physical, and social

development of children and adolescents and the relationship of these elements to the

elementary and secondary instructional programs; the ability to establish healthy learning

environments, to manage routine matters, and to promote individual and group growth; an

appreciation of the problems involved in teaching and of the principles which should guide

solutions; the ability to evaluate teaching reflectively and to learn how to modify methods when

needed; an understanding of, appreciation for, and commitment to the professional code of

ethics.

QUESTION 3: DISCUSS THE BENEFITS OF COOPERATIVE EDUCATION TO:

3.1 STUDENT INTERN
From the student’s perspective, internships capture an intangible aspect of

higher learning that is often lacking in classrooms and textbooks: the value of

real-world experience. While this can be conveyed, to some extent, with class
projects, case studies, and clinical observation, nothing quite compares to the

experience of being immersed in a fast-paced work environment.

3.2 EMPLOYER
For employers, internships provide a powerful recruitment opportunity.

Through these programs, organizations can capture fresh talent and shape a

new generation of hardworking employees. The risk of taking on an intern is

minimal, as employers only commit to working with interns for a few short

months. If they are pleased with the intern’s performance, employers can make a

greater commitment while streamlining the recruitment, hiring, and on boarding

processes.

3.3 COLLEGE
Not only the students and the employers do benefit on the internship. This

Cooperative Education Program also helps the schools to gain a better understanding

of employer requirements from the feedback given on their students and how they may

need to modify their curricula and pedagogy to meet them.
