1) List the 5 steps in the Scientific Method – in order.
1. State the Problem 2. Gather data 3. Form a Hypothesis (a possible explanation based on information) 4. Test the Hypothesis – Experiment 5. Draw a Conclusion 2) How are a hypothesis, a theory, and a law different? A hypothesis is a possible explanation based on information, a theory is an explanation of how or why something happens, and a law is a statement that has proven to be true multiple times. 3) List the 5 parts of an experiment – in order. 1. The Control Group is the part already known & kept the same. 2. The Experimental Group contains the Independent Variable and is the part tested for a change or new outcome. 3. The Constants are everything that stays the same for each group. 4. The Independent Variable is the part that is changed. 5. The Dependent Variable depends on the independent variable. 4) How do you convert from unit to unit in the Metric System? milli = .001, 1/1000 centi = .01, 1/100 deci = .1, 1/10 Base (meter, liter, gram, etc.) = 1.0, 1/1 Deca = 10. Hecto = 100. Kilo = 1000. 5) What is the technical term for “long division”? Dimensional Analysis 6) List the 5 rules for determining significant digits. 1. All non-zero digits are always significant. 2. Zeroes placed before other digits are not significant. 3. Zeroes placed between other digits are always significant. 4. Zeroes placed after other digits but behind a decimal point are significant. 5. Zeroes at the end of a number are significant only if they are behind a decimal point, otherwise, it is impossible to tell if they are significant. 7) How is determining the number of significant digits different in addition/subtraction and multiplication/division? Addition/ Subtraction – the number of decimal places (not significant digits) in the answer should be the same as the least number of decimal places in any of the numbers being added or subtracted. Multiplication/ Division – the number of significant digits in an answer should equal the least number of significant digits in any one of the numbers being multiplied or divided. 8) In Science, what is the one main difference in rounding numbers, compared to regular math? If the number to the right of the number in question is a 5, look back at the number in question. If the number in question is Even, leave it alone. If it is Odd, round it up. 9) What is the difference between precision and accuracy? Precision is something that can repeat over and over again. Accuracy is how correct or exact something is.
