Design an Experiment

Instructions:
The Scientific Method is a
foundational topic that many of you
should have seen before. On the
next page you are going to complete
a question report of an imaginary
experiment. This assignment will
gauge your understanding of the
terms and methods associated with
experimental design. Please be sure
to answer ALL of the questions and
give detailed explanations when
necessary. Include a data table and a
graph of your choice (Bar, Line, Pie,
etc…) to represent your data for
extra credit. This is a Multi-Day
Assignment. Also try to have some
fun with it and be creative!
Question:
Describe a topic that you are interested in.
Cancer specifically breast cancer 4

Why does this topic interest you?

It interests me because I find it fascinating how a mess up in cell production can
cause such a disastrous effect to the body, as well as how fast and unnoticeable it
can occur. Also how common it is in the USA.

How could this topic impact/benefit society?

If we found a way to more beneficially cure or treat it, it could help so many more
children and adults in recovering and moving past it. Rather than succumbing to its
effects. We would have a bigger understanding to which causes are more prominent
in the causation in breast cancer.

What aspect of this topic do you want to test?

How fast cancer cells grow with the most common causes of that specific cancer.

Hypothesis:
Define/describe a hypothesis.
A hypothesis is a testable statement in which you state your belief or thoughts on the
relationship between variables.

Based on the aspect of your topic that you want to test, state your hypothesis.
In hotter and more humid climates, the cancer cells will grow faster and worsen,
because the heat accelerates cell reproduction, meaning warmer climates is the
biggest causation of breast cancer.

Define/describe a “Null hypothesis.”

When there is no large difference between specified population. No effect, no
relationship.

Define/describe an “Alternative hypothesis.”

The opposite of Null hypothesis as it describes the prediction of relationship or effect.
Experiment:
Define/Describe the characteristics of a good experiment.
Single variable is tested and a control is used

Explain your experiment, and how you plan to test your hypothesis.
I would have cancer cells in an lab and artificially test all major causes of breast
cancer into the cancer cells and see which cancer cells grows faster.

Define/Describe what constants are.

When it doesn’t change throughout the experiment

Identify/List the constants in your experiment.

How many cancer cells are used in beginning, all the artificial implimentions addded
into the cells, the number of causes of breast cancer we will make.

Define/Describe what a control sample is.

Variable that remains unchanged and tested.

Identify/List the control in your experiment.

Cancer cells growing in lab.

Define/Describe what an independent variable is.

The variable in which is changing.

Identify/List the independent variable in your experiment.

Growing od cancer cells based on the causes they will be exposed.

Define/Describe what a dependent variable is.

Variable being tested.
Identify/List the dependent variable in your experiment.
How big/fast they grow faster.

Data:
Define/describe what bias is.
Prejudice in favor of one side or opinion.

How can bias jeopardize data?

It can make info unreliable and invalid as the experimenter could have been biased to
a certain conclusion.

Please use the [Insert]->Table option above to create a data table. Make sure to label
your rows and columns. Use your imaginary figures to fill in your chart.

Climate Unhealthy diet Chlorine

Sample 1 o.5cm 3.2 cm 1 cm
Sample 2 0.8cm 5 cm .7 cm
Sample 3 0.7cm 4.3 cm 1.1 cm
Sample 4 0.8cm 3.9 cm 1 cm

*Extra Credit* represent your data using a graph

Analyze:
How can bias jeopardize the analysis of data?
The results might not be accurate.

Define/describe an outlier.
a person or thing situated away or detached from the main body or system

What is meant by the term data skew?

Skewed data is data that creates an asymmetrical, skewed curve on a graph

Did any data points stand out on your table?

Unhealthy diet significant grew faster.

Differentiate the terms: Mean, Mode, and Median.

Mean: the average or the most common value in a collection of numbers
Mode: the value that is repeatedly occurring in a given set
Median: the middle value of the given list of data, when arranged in an order

Report/Conclusion:
Was your hypothesis correct?
No, an unhealthy diet is the faster growing cause of cancer cells.

How could we improve this experiment?

Have more causes that makes cancer cells.

What is the significance of your findings(How can we apply this information)?

We know know how fast certain things make cancer cells and how fast they grow.
