MODULE 3 : MACRAME MATERIAL AND PRODUCTS


LESSON 4 :
3.1 DEFINITION OF MACRAME
● MACRAME is the art or craft of tying cordage into knots in such a way that they
form a useful or decorative shape.

● MACRAME only requires one major material in making any project and this is the
cord. The cord type to be used may vary to come up with elegant and artistic
products. For example, the cord which is dyed, cheap, and excellent material for
holding plant holders, is different from embroidery threads that are used for
delicate ornamental work.

HISTORY OF MACRAME
In the early 14th and 15th centuries when this crafts was practiced in France and Italy. The
patterned knotted fabrics created were used in churches for vestments and altar cloth in early
days. These crafts became popular among the British during the 19th century. Legends says,
that North American sailors spent long hours abroad ships practicing macramé square knots
and hitch knots.
Arabic word “ migramah” , originally meant “ stripped towel” or “ embroidered veil”.
This crafts brought from Middle East to Spain by the Moors. Then spread through Europe and
was introduced to England from Holland by QUEEN MARY, wife of WILLIAM OF ORANGE, in the
late 17th century. Macramé soon became a popular pastime in court circles.
