Social Grace
Social Grace
Last week, we have discussed about image management and employment
correspondence. We learned in image management that we must understand
ourselves so we can know what areas we need to work on for us to have a better
image projection of who we really are. In short, we must unleash our confidence
and develop our love for self.

In today’s lesson, we will discuss social grace. But what does social grace
mean? According to livaboutdotcom (2018), social grace is your attitude of showing
politeness and kindness to welcome people. In addition, this is the standard of the
society that determines the level of your kindness and approachability

In image management, there are other people’s perception about us which

composed our self-image. In social grace, this aspects of personality and social
identity such as race, gender, religion, and age have effects on an individual’s
privilege and power in the society (Webb, 2021).

In relation to image management, social grace requires self-awareness of who

you really are. Take time to continue knowing your identity, change what you think
you need to change for you to be a better version of yourself. The reason why you
need to execute these things because social grace is important in all kinds of
relationships – friendships, workplace, etc. You need to learn how to interact and
be polite because social grace is one kind of projection you may possess as part of
how you manage your own image (liveaboutdotcom, 2018).

How to Behave with Social Grace

Social grace is so rare nowadays. It can be associated with chivalry, where a

man shows courteous behavior toward women. It is easily noticed because it is
rarely observed. As students and later, professionals, it is important that social
grace would come out from you naturally. It will start by practicing it early as now. If
you are already doing it before our lesson, then that is better. But if not, we
encourage you to do it.

Here are some ways you can manifest the attitude of social grace in you according
to liveaboutdotcom (2018):

1. Making proper introductions to people.

2. Listening and not interrupting in conversation.
3. Using good table manners.
4. Maintaining good cell phone etiquette.
5. Being careful not to put your foot in your mouth.
How to Develop Social Grace

We can develop social grace through observing what we are seeing with
others on how they show kindness to others. Simple gestures like offering a seat,
letting others be ahead of you in line due to some difficult situation where they are
in, waiting for your turn to speak, and many more. Being sensitive to other’s feelings
is part of how we can develop social grace.

We need to know if the person whom we are talking with might be bored
already. Perhaps, they are in a hurry and is just waiting for you to finish the
conversation because it would be too rude if they will interrupt you. Things like these
are important to take note of for you to be conscious with your actions and manifest
social grace eventually.

Presence of mind always is the key for you to ignite and start your social grace
attitude. You can apply this in your workplace. You can show social grace by being
sensitive enough such as your boss may be so tired finishing the report. One way
to show comfort and support is through asking them if they need help. Offer
something which can make them feel you are willing to do because you are a
thoughtful workmate or friend.
