Examples of set:

• V is a set of all the vowels in english alphabets


V = { a, e, i o, u}

• C is a set of all the colours in a rainbow.


C = {violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red}

• N is a set of all the counting numbers less than 10.


N = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 }

Rules for Writing a set:-

• We denote sets by capital letters and their elements by


small letters.
Example: V is a set of all the vowels in English alphabets
V = { a, e, i, o, u}

• All the elements of the set are enclosed in a curly


brackets { } and are separated by commas (,) .
• If x is an element of set A, we write x €
A which means that ‘x is an element of
A’.

• The elements are not repeated while


writing a set.
