ENS162 – Dynamics of Rigid Bodies

Midterm Exam (2:00 – 4:00 PM); May 1, 2022

Directions: Show or present solutions and answers in a neat and organized manner. Upload your answers in your
specific and respective submission folder (folder named after you). Be mindful of the duration of the exam. A 10-minute
allowance shall be bestowed for submission and or uploading of answers. Any submission beyond the time allotted shall
be imposed with necessary deductions. File formatting should be in .pdf. Do not attempt to plagiarize anything. Write
your full name in every page and sign every page as well.

1. There are rare marvels in the realm of athletics as captivating and remarkable as the two-sport star. Since the
foundation of the National Football League, less than 70 players are recognized to have reached the highest level of play
in both professional football and professional baseball (MLB – Major League Baseball). Athletes such Bo Jackson,
Deion Sanders, Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks then and now Denver Broncos, Kyler Murray and of course Tim
Tebow just to name some. The image below shows Wilson hitting a 5.1-ounce baseball with an initial velocity 140 ft/s
at an angle of 40° with the horizontal. Find first, the kinetic energy of the ball instantly after it is hit, next, the kinetic
energy of the ball when it reaches its maximum height, and finally, the maximum height above the ground reached by
the ball.

40°

2 ft.

2. It is common to see a crane set-up in an ore blending facility such as the proposed expansion project by the PSC
or the Philippine Sinter Corporation. Specifically, a bulk – handling crane set – up wherein instead of a hook at the end,
bulk – handling cranes have a specialized attachment that utilizes a grabbing procedure and a bucket to transport
materials. Now, if we consider such machinery as shown by the image below, if the bucket attachment is suspended
from a traveling crane which moves along a stationary bridge, determine the maximum allowable speed v of the crane if
the bucket is to swing no more than 10 feet horizontally when the crane is brought to a sudden stop.
3. Don’t be surprised when sometimes you received a parcel or a package that is damaged or broken. This is mainly
because of the mishandling by the shippers and delivery companies. Like for an instance, you ordered something online
then it was packed by the seller and picked up by the shipper. Upon reaching the facility, the package you ordered are
just thrown down an incline at say point A with a velocity of 1 m/s. The packages slide along the surface ABC to a
conveyor belt which moves with a velocity of 2 m/s. Understanding dynamics of rigid bodies and considering a
coefficient of kinetic friction to be equal to 0.25 between the packages and the surface ABC, you are asked to determine
the distance d if the packages are to arrive at C with a velocity of 2 m/s and give your recommendation and reasoning if
this distance is appropriate or satisfactory to ensure packages integrity.

4. For your project in ENS162: Dynamics of Rigid bodies, you are asked to conduct an experiment and submit an
engineering report of the matter. The experiment is mainly about looking for textbook problems and creating a scaled
and physical set – up of it and then conducting the procedures stated in the problem such finding the final velocity or the
maximum height reached by the scaled set – up and such. In your case you decided to do an actual set – up involving
blocks and springs. You utilized a 3-kg block and rest it on top of a 2-kg block which is supported by but not attached to
a spring possessing a spring constant of 40 N/m. You then suddenly removed the upper block. Now, you are to
determine the maximum speed reached by the lower 2-kg block and the maximum height reached by it. All of your
findings, methodology, discussions, etcetera are then compiled in an engineering report which you submitted in order to
pass the subject.
5. Diligence is vital. While pondering about that statement that your professor said, you stumble upon a unique rod.
Which is restrained to move along an equally unique planes. If point A has an acceleration of 3 m/s2 and a velocity of 2
m/s, both directed down the plane at the instant the rod is horizontal as shown below, you determined the angular
acceleration of the rod at this instant. Which you presented in a neat and organized manner and uploaded in the
submission folder of your subject.

6. You are asked to layout the dimensions and paint the necessary lines for a newly erected basketball facility.
There was a considerable amount of paint left so you decided to paint a mural in one of the walls within the confines of
the facility. Utilizing a ladder, which is 10 meters long, you were halfway on it when you notice that bottom starts
sliding out from under you as represented by the figure below. Understanding that point A has a velocity vA = 2 m/s
directed to the left when = 60°, solve for the angular velocity of the ladder and your velocity as well.
