WEEK 5 POST
1. Do you think these two characteristics—height and hair length—are connected in any
way?
It's possible that there could be a connection between height and hair length. Taller people might
tend to have longer hair, but this is just a hypothesis at this point.
2. How will you know if they are related to each other?
We can determine if height and hair length are related by calculating the Pearson correlation
coefficient (r) for this data set. If the value of r is close to 1 or -1, it would suggest a strong
positive or negative correlation, respectively. If r is close to 0, it would suggest a weak or no
correlation.
3. Do you expect them to be correlated? Why or why not? If yes, would you expect this
correlation to be positive or negative? Strong or weak?
I don't have a strong expectation either way. Height and hair length might be related, but it's
difficult to predict the direction (positive or negative) or the strength of the correlation without
analyzing the data. It's possible that there could be a weak positive correlation if taller
individuals tend to have slightly longer hair, but it's also possible that there's no significant
correlation.
4. If you think there is a correlation, do you think it is based on causation? Why or why not?
If yes, is this causation direct or indirect?
Even if we find a correlation between height and hair length, it does not necessarily imply
causation. Correlation only indicates that there is a statistical relationship between the two
variables. It's possible that other factors, such as genetics, personal preferences, or cultural
influences, could be driving both height and hair length without one causing the other. So, we
cannot assume causation without additional evidence, and if causation were to exist, it could be
either direct or indirect.

7. What did you not get correct? What do you think caused you to be incorrect?
I didn't make a specific prediction about the strength of the correlation, so I didn't have a correct
or incorrect expectation in that regard. The actual correlation coefficient (-0.72431) indicates a
stronger negative correlation than I might have initially assumed.
Scatterplot:
A scatterplot is a helpful visual representation of the data that provides a clear view of the
relationship between height and hair length. It allows us to see the data points and the overall
trend. While the correlation coefficient gives a numerical measure of the relationship, the
scatterplot adds precision by showing the distribution of individual data points and how they
align with the regression line. This visual precision can help us better understand the nature of
the correlation.
