ALL ANSWERS MUST BE ELABORATED AND WELL EXPLAINED

ACTIVITY SHEET # 10
1. Discuss fundamental ways how you will keep our biodiversity safe and healthy.

A student can contribute to keeping biodiversity safe and healthy through various
fundamental ways, including educating oneself, Supporting conservation efforts,
Promoting sustainable practices, Participating in citizen science, Spreading
awareness, Advocating for policy change and Respecting wildlife. Even small
actions can have a positive impact on biodiversity conservation. By taking these
steps, students can contribute to the collective effort of protecting and preserving
our planet's rich biodiversity.

2. Research some endangered species and cite examples of how humanity can
save these species.

Some endangered species and examples of how humanity can save them
include:

Giant Panda: Conservation efforts involve protecting their habitats, implementing

anti-poaching measures, and promoting breeding and reintroduction programs.
Establishing protected areas, such as nature reserves, and promoting
sustainable forestry practices also contribute to their conservation.

Black Rhinoceros: Conservation strategies include strict anti-poaching measures,

habitat protection, and translocation of individuals to safe areas. Community-
based conservation programs that involve local communities in protecting rhino
populations have also shown positive results.

Sumatran Orangutan: Conservation efforts focus on preserving their rainforest

habitats, combating illegal logging and land encroachment, and supporting
rehabilitation and release programs for captive individuals. Promoting sustainable
palm oil production and responsible tourism can also contribute to their
conservation.

3. Cite examples of habits that people do that harm the ecosystem. Give solutions
to avoid these habits.

Some habits that people do that harm the ecosystem include:

Excessive use of single-use plastics: This contributes to plastic pollution in

oceans and landfills. Solutions include reducing plastic consumption, opting for
reusable alternatives, and properly recycling plastic waste.

Deforestation: Clearing forests for agriculture, logging, or urbanization disrupts

ecosystems and reduces biodiversity. Solutions involve promoting sustainable
forestry practices, supporting reforestation initiatives, and using alternative land-
use practices.

Overfishing: Unsustainable fishing practices, such as overfishing or destructive

fishing methods, deplete fish populations and harm marine ecosystems.
Solutions include promoting responsible fishing practices, implementing fishing
quotas, and supporting marine protected areas.

4. Cite five things that you do to help fight climate change.

Five things that individuals can do to help fight climate change are:

Reduce carbon footprint: Minimize personal carbon emissions by conserving

energy, using energy-efficient appliances, opting for renewable energy sources,
and reducing reliance on fossil fuels for transportation.

Practice sustainable transportation: Choose walking, biking, or public

transportation whenever possible, and consider carpooling or using electric
vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

Conserve resources: Reduce waste generation, recycle materials, and support

the use of recycled products. Conserve water by minimizing usage and fixing
leaks.

Adopt sustainable dietary habits: Reduce meat consumption, particularly from

resource-intensive livestock production, and opt for plant-based or sustainable
protein alternatives. Support local and sustainable food sources.

Advocate for change: Get involved in climate advocacy by supporting policies

and initiatives that promote renewable energy, sustainability, and conservation.
Engage with local communities, organizations, and policymakers to drive positive
change.

5. How does the discussion of biodiversity can be related to the concepts of

Science, Technology, and Society?

The discussion of biodiversity is closely related to the concepts of Science,

Technology, and Society (STS) in the following ways:

1. Science: Biodiversity is a subject of scientific study, involving the examination

of ecosystems, species interactions, and ecological processes. Scientists
conduct research to understand biodiversity patterns, document species, study
the impacts of human activities, and develop conservation strategies. Science
provides the foundation of knowledge and empirical evidence on which decisions
regarding biodiversity conservation are based.

2. Technology: Technology plays a role in both the understanding and

conservation of biodiversity. Technological tools such as remote sensing, DNA
sequencing, and geographic information systems (GIS) aid in monitoring
biodiversity, mapping habitats, and assessing ecosystem health. Technology
also facilitates data analysis, modeling, and simulation, assisting in predicting the
effects of environmental changes on biodiversity. Innovative technologies can
offer solutions for conservation challenges, such as advanced monitoring
systems, genetic techniques, and habitat restoration methods.

3. Society: Biodiversity conservation has significant social implications. The well-

being of human societies is closely intertwined with the health of ecosystems and
the services they provide, including clean water, food, medicine, and climate
regulation. Societal choices and behaviors, such as land-use practices,
consumption patterns, and conservation policies, impact biodiversity. Societal
values, ethics, and cultural perspectives shape attitudes towards biodiversity and
influence decisions on its conservation. Additionally, engaging local communities,
indigenous knowledge systems, and stakeholders in biodiversity conservation is
crucial for effective and equitable outcomes.
