ACTIVITY 3

1. Form a conclusion based on our topic the Roman Catholic

Diocese of San Jose de Antique. Explain

Before the Mill Hill Missionaries arrived in the province in 1906, Aglipayanism was thriving over the
entire region. The second group of Mill Hill Missionaries arrived in Antique in December, and they
labored fervently to revive Catholicism. Antique became a separate ecclesiastical province on June 19,
1962. The first prelate of the newly established Prelature was MOST REV. CORNELIUS DE WIT, MHM,
who was consecrated and installed in San Jose, the capital town, on the same day. They have succeeded
in creating a firm basis for the growth of faith in the Antique land as well as the Antique heart and
intellect from the modest beginnings, guided by the Second Vatican Council.

It was also the canonical erection of the Diocese of San Jose de Antique on March 25, 1982, when the
MOST REV. RAUL Q. MARTIREZ was installed as the new bishop. What the previous shepherd had begun,
the new shepherd carried on. He did all in his power to preserve the Antiqueos' religious beliefs. His
preaching and discussions were noted for their clarity and solid theology. Due to Bishop Martirez's
deteriorating health, the MOST REV. ROMULO DE LA CRUZ was appointed Coadjutor Bishop in 2001.
Bishop Martirez received assistance from him in the pastoral care of the Diocese.

After five years of excellent service, Bishop Romulo de la Cruz departed Antique for the Diocese of
Kidapawan later that year. The Diocesan Administrator was chosen to be the Very Rev. Fortunato
Abiera. The Most Reverend Jose Romeo Lazo was appointed the fourth bishop of San Jose de Antique in
2009. He was a native of San Jose, Antique, and a priest in the area who was appointed Bishop of Kalibo
at that time. The Antiqueos were glad to see him back.

Bishop Romeo Lazo was appointed Archbishop of Jaro in 2017, succeeding his predecessor Archbishop
Angel Lagdameo after serving his native Diocese for 8 years. The Very Rev. Anrunico Elemento was
chosen by the Papal Nuncio to serve as the Diocesan Administrator in the absence of a shepherd. The
5th Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose de Antique was installed on April 9, 2019, by the MOST REV.
MARVYN MACEDA. The young and brand-new bishop from the Diocese of Naval was warmly welcomed
by the Diocese. He intended to continue the work of his predecessors while being fresh to the Diocese.
He also exhorts the public, clergy, and religious to enhance their spiritual lives by breviary prayer,
devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and holy rosary.
