THE FAULT IN OUR STARS CHAPTER 11 - EXTRACT

Name:Esvida Celina Dionicio Ramos .- Chapter 11 complete test in 13

minutes and 30 seconds, no questions included
FIRST PART: (3-4 minutes)
FIRST: write your sum up (approximately 12 lines)
Good morning today I'm going to talk about the extract that I have chosen, this extract is part
of the chapter 11 of the book “THE FAULT IN OUR STARS”
The excerpt is about Hazel and Agustus' mother traveling to Amsterdam. They check into the
Filosoof Hotel. Hazel's mom would like to visit Vondelpark despite being tired from the long
flight; but Hazel prefers to take a nap. Upon waking up, she finds her mother sitting up, since
she never went to the park. However, she has already made a reservation for Hazel and Gus at
the Oranjee restaurant. The young people have a romantic date at the restaurant and Van
Houten surprises them by covering the entire bill. The two go down to the canal and sit on a
bench. On the other hand, Hazel asks about Caroline, and Gus fully explains that Caroline went
through a terrible ordeal until her death. He also talks about his love for her until  her death.
Hazel replies that she would hate to hurt him, but Gus says that it would be a privilege that she
would break his heart.

SECOND: (relate the extract with other chapters of the book) (approximately 15 lines)

The relationship between the general book and the story chosen above is as follows:

first point my chapter 11 is related to chapter 10 since in this chapter 10 when Hazel and
Augustus travel to Amsterdam, on the plane Gus reveals his feelings to Hazel in such a way
that similarly in my chapter he talks about his feelings for hazel

Second point, my chapter 11 is related to chapter 6 since in both chapters it tells us that Hazel
feels like a bomb that when it explodes it will hurt people around her in such a way that she
doesn't want to hurt Augustus when it explodes.

third point, my chapter is related to chapter 6 since in one part it mentions that Hazel feels
jealous and depressed when looking for information on Agustus's ex-girlfriend. This part is
related to my chapter since in chapter 11 Hazel continues being jealous and wants to know
more and asks Agustus about his ex-girlfriend.

THIRD: (express your opinions on the characters, events, ideas and themes presented in the
extract) (approximately 10 lines)
In my opinion, the fragment 11 that I got is a lovely part of the whole book, I can say that it
was romantic, since the character of Augustus is very chivalrous towards Hazel, and he is not
only chivalrous but also maintains a high standard  of self-esteem In their romantic date, the
most moving thing was how Augustus in a very romantic way shows his love to Hazel
eradicating Hazel's feelings of sadness, insecurity and jealousy, he tells Hazel that as much as
her death hurt him , the important thing is that Augustus loves her. Finally, if I had been in
Hazel's place, I would have been able to let go of those feelings of sadness and jealousy for a
person who is already dead and accept of Augustus feelings and be able to enjoy those
romantic moments.
SECOND PART.

1.    Did you or any know experience or is currently experiencing some

events related to the events described in the extract you are talking
about?

Yes, I had an experience related to the chapter I am reading. When I went to visit my
mother to Huaraz (a city in Peru), when I arrived to the city my mother wanted us to
take a walk in an average, old, but beautiful park that is around the corner of my house,
but at that moment I felt very tired because of the trip and the weather that affected
me.

So,  I rested and when I woke up I saw that my mother had already prepared dinner
and some medicines for me to get better, then the next day I felt better and we went
out for a walk around the city and buy some things like some dresses  and make up
that my mother needed to attend a recognition ceremony so my mother chose a short
dress and I chose a loose and long dress.

When we finished buying the dresses we went to have breakfast at a place where they
sold everything related to fruits, we ordered fruit salad, strawberry juice and something
extra to take out. When the afternoon arrived, we got ready to go to the party, then we
arrived at the place, everything was beautiful, a huge hall with crystal designs, waiters
and other things.

When my mother came to the front to give a speech I could not contain my
emotion and I became sentimental to see that my mother was still fulfilling her
dreams, when the ceremony was over we went back home to rest.

This experience, spending time with my mother, was the most beautiful thing I could do
with my mother with her, which is related to the experience of Hazel and Augustus
when they traveled to Amsterdam and had a date and also a walk around the city

2. While at the restaurant, in their trip to Amsterdam, Augustus asks

Hazel if she believes in an afterlife. In your view, why do you think
people have always wondered about life after death? (200 WORDS)

Death is not a one-time event; in fact, there is not a single definition of death, it
depends on the point of view of each person since it can be scientific or
religious, from my religious point of view I can mention that death is nothing
more than another phase of our existence.

I consider that we are spirits inside an earthly body with an expiration date, our
spirit is immortal when our life experience on this earth ends, our spirit and our
soul continue their evolution, continue their way in another existence;
nevertheless, many are the positions of the different religions as for example in
the religious field we point out that after the earthly life there is a heaven and a
hell, but on the scientific side they have the position that death is an illusion
product of a person’s consciousness, so once the spectator dies the illusion
ends.
Even though, there are these two postures of life after death there are also
people who do not know what to believe whether to defend the religious or
scientific position and there is they wonder if there really is life after death, then
things are not clear yet, unfortunately.

3.  In the extract, Augustus says he fears not having a meaningful life
and doing something extraordinary, but Hazel thinks that it's unfair
of him to say that the only meaningful lives are the ones where
people live or die for some cause. Then, do you agree with either
Augustus or Hazel’s view on a meaningful life? (200 WORDS)

Definitely, I agree with Hazel's opinion because in order to have meaning in

life a person does not have to be a hero to die or have a specific purpose for
living since to live with meaning, from my perspective, is to commit
ourselves to ourselves by following that which defines us, then, life may not
have meaning, but it is up to each person to fill his or her own life with
meaning. It is like saying I found myself with life, I found myself choosing
how I want to live life, here it is necessary to question ourselves on what
sense does our life have, and what sense does our existence have; thus, we
can fill ourselves with goals, but for our lives to have sense we have to build
it by ourselves. Finally, to think that life has some sense and that we are
looking for it varies according to the point of view of each person and,
ideologically, on what they believe; for example, if we consider a Christian
reference they have the ideology that the purpose of life is to reach the
divine salvation through the grace of God and the intercession of Jesus
Christ.

THIRD PART
4.     Do you consider that the main idea of the extract you are
talking about or some ideas of it are related to one of the themes of
the syllabus? If so, which one? Please, give an example.
Yes, I consider that the main idea of the fragment, the visit to a memorial
place and the love relationship between Hazel and Augustus are related
to holidays and travel because at some point in the extract the couple
organize a trip to Amsterdam.
To begin, I will talk about Augustus inviting Hazel to take a trip to the city
of Amsterdam, which was a planned trip in order to visit Peter Van
Houten, who is Hazel's favorite novel writer, for whom the young girl feels
a great admiration and at the same time a curiosity to discover what will
happen after the abrupt ending of the novel "An Imperial Sorrow". Once
there, they get an unexpected surprise when they discover that Van
Houten is an alcoholic and stubborn man who treats Hazel with
contempt, but after this unfortunate encounter, the young people decide
to enjoy their stay and their love grows stronger and stronger. Then, both
characters experienced something new, but unpleasant at the same
time, because the encounter with Hazel-s favorite writer was not as they
expected which disappointed Hazel and Gus because they were
expecting to know a really nice and well educated person to whom they
were going to be able to share some ideas about his book.
Secondly, we have Hazel and Gus' date at the Oranjee restaurant in
Amsterdam, where the young people have a romantic and nice date, but
right after they finished their dinner and were about to pay the bill,
incredibly, Van Houten surprised them by paying it completely. Then, the
two of them go down to the canal and sit on a bench where Hazel
confesses to him that she would hate to hurt him, but Gus replies that it
would be a privilege for her to break his heart.

5. Please, identify the main characters in the extract you are reading
and point out not only the value or value or values they have but also
the ones they lack (200). Do not forget to mention what we can learn
from the character or characters you selected (100). (300 WORDS).

The excerpt I am reading talks about a boy and a girl who live a loving
relationship inside a tragic context, plus they both became the most
important cultural phenomenon of that semester for young people.
Augustus and Hazel, these two young people fighting their cancer, teach us
values that perhaps we forget about.
Augustus was a tall boy who was sociable with the people around him,
gentlemanly, brave and self-confident, positive, friendly and loving, on the
other hand we have Hazel who has a pessimistic character, which leads her
to suffer from depression and anxiety. Furthermore, these two young people
promote friendship, true love, mutual compassion, acceptance, the power to
trust in themselves, and the most important quality a person should have,
never to give up even if we have problems whether it is an illness or any
other difficulty that often do not let us get ahead. Nonetheless, as nobody is
perfect they also lack some values as resilience, intransigence, prudence,
impartiality, and strength to face the truth.
Finally, this fragment leaves us a message of hope and love for life, for
ourselves, and at the same time it teaches us a way to create awareness
among the population and be preventive individuals against diseases, and to
maintain a healthy life style despite the difficulties that may arise. Likewise,
Augustus teaches us to be brave, to have the courage to face the adversities
that life puts in our way and even people who do not believe in us.
On the other hand, we can also learn from Hazel to be direct when expressing
ourselves, that is, to learn to say what we think without fear of what they may say about
us and we should always keep in mind that we should feel good and satisfied with
ourselves.
