Description of the book cover

The background of the book’s front cover is light blue. There are two big clouds, a white
one and a black one, which are the things you recognize first. The title, “The Fault in Our
Stars”, is written in the black cloud and the name of the author, John Green, is written in the
white cloud. The font resembles the fog in the clouds, which makes it very suitable for the
rest of the cover. Altogether, the front cover looks like a sky with some clouds. Above the
two clouds is a yellow dot and it says that the book is a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.
This is kind of an advertisement because the publisher of the book wants you to think that
the book must be good as it is a bestseller. At the bottom there is a quote from a famous
German-Australian author, Markus Zusak. He tells us about the feelings he had while
reading the book and that he wanted to read more books by John Green.

On the back cover, there is one quote from the famous newspaper “Time”, which tells us
how good the book is. The next paragraph is kind of an advertisement as well. Again, the
designer of the book cover wants us to think it is an incredible good book. The last
paragraph summarizes the plot very roughly. We can guess that Hazel and Augustus fall in
love, although it is not written in the text.

Expectations of the book

As I have already seen the movie and read the book as well, I know what the plot is about
and I know that I like it. When I went to the cinema to watch the movie, I was a bit sceptical
because I normally do not like dramatic and sentimental films but afterwards I was very
impressed how good it is and it was actually the first movie I have ever nearly started to
cry. A few months later I decided to buy the book because one of my friends told me that it
is pretty good. Again, I was very sceptical because I did not want to read the book in case I
do not like it as much as I liked the movie. I was not sure, whether the author could
describe the story as good as it is described in the movie and I thought that I would not like
the book at all if it was not as great as the film. Another thing I was not really sure about
was that I do not read a lot of fictional books. I mean I do read a lot but mostly no made up
stories. Obviously there was a lot of doubt whether to read it or not but finally I ended up
reading it – and I did not regret it.

Summary of each chapter
The book starts with a quote from the book that is mentioned in “The Fault in Our
Stars”, An Imperial Affliction. The quote is about a man looking at the sea. He sees the waves
and the water as a metaphor for time.

Chapter One (24/05/15)

The main character, Hazel Graze Lancaster, a girl suffering from terminal cancer, lives with
her parents. Her mom makes her attend a support group for children and teenagers who
are diagnosed with cancer as well. She meets Augustus Water there, who has joined the
group because of his friend Isaac, who attends the group as well. Augustus and Hazel get to
meet each other and he invites her to his house to watch a movie with an actress, who looks
like Hazel Graze according to Augustus.

Chapter Two (24/05/15)

Augustus drives with Hazel to his house. On the way, Hazel Graze explains her cancer story
to Augustus. When they arrive at the house, Gus’s parents are cooking. They welcome Hazel
and the two teenagers go downstairs into the basement, aka Gus’s room, to talk. Hazel
makes Gus read her favourite book, An Imperial Affliction and she promises to read one of
Gus’s books. After that they watch V for Vendetta, a pretty famous movie. At the end of the
chapter they say goodbye and say that they would catch up soon.

Chapter Three (25/05/15)

The next morning, Hazel’s mom wakes her up because it is her thirty-third half-birthday,
which means she turns 16 and a half years old. To celebrate the day, Hazel Graze meets up
with her old school friend Kaitlyn. They hang out in a shopping centre and talk about
anything and afterwards they go shopping. After Kaitlyn leaves, Hazel buys the second
book of the book series Gus fancies.

Chapter Four (25/05/15)

Hazel starts reading An Imperial Affliction again and we get to know what the book is about.
It is about Anna, who has cancer and the book ends in the middle of a sentence because
Anna probably dies. Because Hazel Graze wants to know what happens after the ending of
the book she wants to track down the author. After a while Hazel calls Augustus and
because she realizes that Isaac is with him and apparently very depressed and sad, she
comes over to help. When she arrives, Gus tells her that Isaac and his girlfriend broke up.
As a therapy Augustus offers Isaac to destroy all of his basketball trophies.

Chapter Five (25/05/15)

After a while Gus calls Hazel and tells her what he thinks about An Imperial Affliction. He
also loves the book and they talk about it for quite a while. Somehow Augustus contacted
Van Houten, the author, and he surprises Hazel with an email he got from Van Houten’s
assistant. At the end of the phone call they discover “Okay” as kind of a promise to each
other, like Monica and Isaac used to say “always”. Hazel writes an email to Van Houten and
asks him to give her some information about what happens after the end of her favourite
book. In this chapter Isaac has his operation as well and gets blind because of that. The next
morning Hazel Graze gets an answer from Van Houten, who tells her that he could
impossibly write about the ending of the book but he offers her to talk about it if she ever
finds herself in Amsterdam, where he lives. At the end of the chapter Gus offers her his
“Genie Wish”, a wish that all children with cancer get from an organisation and because
Hazel has already used her wish for a trip to Disney World, Augustus wants to take her on a
Trip to Amsterdam.

Chapter Six (25/05/15)

Home again, Hazel tells her parents about Gus’s generous offer to take her to Amsterdam.
They are both not sure whether that is a good idea because of her disease. She is very sad
and also confused about her feelings for Augustus. After she checked the Facebook page of
Gus’s ex-girlfriend, who died of cancer, she decides not to risk hurting him, too. At dinner
she bursts and tells her parents that she is like a grenade that is about to explode and kill
everything around it. Later this evening, her parents come to her room and talk about it
and say that they do not see her as a grenade, but love her without any exceptions. Hazel
finally falls asleep but the next morning she wakes up and has a massive headache.

Chapter Seven (25/05/15)

Hazel Graze’s parents take her to the hospital right away and she faints. Later, she wakes
up in the ICU alone. She learns that the headache was not caused by a brain tumour, but by
fluid in her lungs. She has to spend six more days in the hospital until she is finally allowed
to go home. Augustus, who has been waiting the whole time in the hospital, can talk to her
and he tells her that the trip to the Netherlands is not possible until she gets better. Hazel
does not accept that and asks her mom right away if she could go to Amsterdam.

Chapter Eight (25/05/15)

Hazel attends a Cancer Group Meeting with all her doctors and they discuss her current
situation. At the end of the meeting, Hazel asks whether she can go to Amsterdam and two
of the three doctors say that it is okay but one is against it because he doesn’t want to risk
anything. Hazel is incredibly sad that she can’t go and she calls Augustus. They meet up and
Augustus tries to comfort her. The next morning Hazel receives an email from Van Houten’s
assistant, who tells her that everything is set up for her trip next week. Hazel tells her mom
that they have to tell Van Houten that they won’t come but her mom tells her that the trip is
actually on and the doctors agreed to let her go.

The Controller sit in his office and watch on Captain Marrs and Dick Lane. He sees how the

the music rooms.

In this chapter is captain Marrs described. He is a strong and hard man. He makes no
compromise. If he think there is someone who is or do something against control he
directly do something against him. Dick Lane think he’s a great man. Dick want to be like
Marrs. And there’s a big chance that he can be so one day. In the Chapter we see first the
who control works. We see that the world like control what to show it in real life is very
different.

Saul visit Ruth and there is another person. It’s Ruth granddaughter Sue. She’s a specialist
in hacking save systems. She shows Saul the music room with the dolphins in Neumatt.
Ruth says he must go there and rescue the Dolphins together with Sue.

Saul first look on Sue and think about her. He thought she’s not a really beautiful woman.
Then he realise what Ruth what him to do. He become clear how dolphins make music, but
he rescue them with Sue. He don’t want to do it. He don’t want to be a terrorist. When
Marrs come he first want to talk to him and clear the situation, but I think when he sees
what Marrs do with his car. I think he’s really threatened and now he‘s one of the terrorist
for control and can’t get out of the situation.

Tuesday 3 June, 9.15 a.m.

Sue, Ruth and Saul run away from Captain Marrs. Peter, the Controllers brother, helps them
to escape if he calls his brother. The three flew through a tunnel.

Saul must run away with Sue and Ruth. He do not want to do this. But he can not go out to
Marrs and BEATCON. When he saw Marrs destroyed his car it was a situation he will never
forget. The three have good luck because of Peter, the Controller’s brother. He just call the
Controller and they are safety. I think Peter is an important person for Ruth and PACE. It’s a
good question if Controller know what his brother does.
Chapter 7 : Inside the blue Helicopter

Captain Marrs Dick Lane

Richmond

Tuesday 3 June, 9.30 a.m.

Controller says to Captain Marrs that he‘s not allowed to destroy the house Saul Grant is
inside. Dick Lane ask to kill the Controller, but Captain Marrs explain him that isn’t as good
as it seemed for BEATCON.

Controller is not a person who like BEATCON, but he know Control needs them. He’s the
only one who can tell Marrs want he can do and what not. In this Chapter we see that Dick
Lane first do something and then think about what can happen. He goes directly to Marrs
and ask to make an accident to Controller. Marrs is very different from Lane. Marrs is very
vivacious and he want to fight terrorist, even if there are innocent people. But Marrs also
think about what will happen when he do something.

The three stayed for a short time in the forest. Ruth tells Saul she and Peter set up PACE.
Then they walk through the forest, but they have to look for wolves.

All the things which now happen to Saul are a new for him. He never realised that a real life
outside the Web exist. For example the forest and the wolves. He believes in this time
things like that only exist in the Web.

Tuesday 3 June, 10 a.m.

Dick Lane want to make an impression on Captain Marrs. So he drive with two young
specials. In the forest the two young specials died, because the not yet learned to drive in a
forest.

This another example Dick lane really thinks. He thinks he has a good Idea, but he only
think on Grant and how pleased Marrs would be when he will catch Grant. Why takes Lane
two so young Soldiers. Why does‘ t Lane think if the two soldiers can drive their jetbikes in
the dense forest. Lane learned nothing of his fast suggestion to make an exident to the
Controller.

The three talk about their situation and what is know to doing. Ruth tells Saul about the
ways BEATCON works. Then she says she will stay in Richmond and Sue and Saul have to
go to Switzerland.

In this chapter we can see how BEATCON works. We see that Marrs does all what is needed
to fight the terrorist.

Saul hopes they can stay for a while in the forest, but they start directly to Switzerland to
rescue the dolphins.
Chapter 11 : Find Saul Grant

Dick Lane explains Marrs why he did what he did and why he didn’t talk to him. Captain
Marrs don’t throw Lane out of BEATCON. BEATCON has already started to search for Grant
in the forest.

It is amazing that Marrs does‘ t throw Lane out. He is disappointed and angry about Lane.
Here Marrs react quite different to the terrorist. I didn‘ t thought Marrs would react so
‘soft‘. But it is possible Marrs know that this experience for Lane is a lesson he‘ ll never
forget.

Ruth says good bye to Sue and Saul. The start to go to the tunnels. Sue gives Saul a chip
which identifies him as a tunnel worker. So, they can move by train to France. Sue contact a
PACE member in France to catch them when they arrived.

It’s great how organised PACE is. It seems so easy to travel with a new identity in another
country for them. PACE exist just for three year, but have people in all important areas and
organisations.

Marc catch the two in Lyon and drive them to Geneva airport. During the journey they take
back the chips and Sue tells Saul why she’s a PACE member. In Geneva they check in for a
flight to Neumatt.

During their trip to Geneva Sue tells Saul why she’s a PACE member. It is a tragedy story.
Her husband, Robert, wanted to go to a friend‘ s birthday and Marrs thought that he wanted
to go to a terrorist who lived near the friend. Marrs didn‘ t believe Robert and did
something to him Sue don’ t want to tell. But they send Robert back to Sue and he died the
next day. I think it was a terrible experience Sue will never forget. For Robert Sue wants
revenge.

Saul and Sue are going to Caroline. Saul tells her the hole story. She do not believe him. Sue
never want to hear from Saul and then Saul and Sue go.

It is strange Caroline react so cold. Admittedly she listen to Saul, but always think of him
like the terrorist the Web says he is. She does not hear on her heart. Anyway, I think,
Caroline does‘ t believe him because of Sue. May be Caroline is angry because Saul makes
the things he did with Sue, a woman he not nearly knows.

Sue and Saul are in their Hotel room in the Neumatt European Hotel. They take a bath
together. Saul does kiss Sue. Then they talk about Caroline.

Saul is disappointed to the reaction of Caroline. He thought she loves him; and he loves her.
What Caroline said was for Saul incomprehensible. But I think a week ago had also reacted
like Caroline.

What strange is here, is the situation in the bath. It is not like the rest of the book. The short
moment of romantic between Saul and Sue. They kiss eachother and then they talk about
what happened by Caroline and they never talk about the situation.

would be dead. She concentrates herself and do so as if Sauls dead doesn’t interest.

First with her experience Caroline begins to believe what Saul had told her.
When Marrs asks her if she talked to Saul the night befor and Caroline tells Marrs
everything, I thought Marrs will kill Caroline, because she knows a lot of things. It‘ s a
surprise that she survive the meeting with Marrs.

Captain Marrs and his men watch all the screen the have, but they don not find Saul and

I think that the music room is not really safty to everyone. A room no one is allowed to
know, has for a short time no security? I think especially when BEATCON know Saul and
Sue are in Neumatt there have to be security. I can believe that just befor the rooms a
railway is, but no one to look for the dolphins?...

Sue is perfect fit out. She is a person thinks about the hole plan before she do something.
Exact this happens in this chapter. Sue knew they drive through a long tunnel and she
presumed that Marrs would follow her. So, she took a bomb to blow up the tunnel.
