BOOK ANALYSIS

In Nathalie Sinclair’s Book: Mathematics and Beauty Part II: Beauty and Pleasure in Mathematics, she
states the role of aesthetic in Mathematics. Whether it has something to do with the equations or
formulas alone, mathematical inquiries, or the geometrical shapes. She also connected the roles of
aesthetic in Mathematics in which she mentioned three roles that affects the process of solving
mathematical problems, obtaining more pleasing answer than intended. With Nathalie’s Book, it implies
that Mathematics is not all about solving mathematical problems, receiving satisfying feeling is also part
of it in which it will boost one’s determination and interest to solve and uncover more connections that
underlies within the field of Mathematics.

At first, reading the Book is quite complicated to understand. Since there are terms that are unfamiliar
to me, which makes it difficult for me to fully comprehend what the author is intending to imply to the
readers. There are circumstances that I have to search what she meant to some in her examples
because I’m not very well-versed in application of other Mathematical concepts. Although I get to
understand some of her points in achieving the sense of fit, in which there are parts that seem to be
missing to completely get the answer that we are looking for. The feeling of being not contented
because there are missing pieces that are yet to find until the satisfaction is achieved. Even Carl Friedrich
Gauss have to prove the theorem seven times until he found the effective and preferable ways of
proving. Just because a person is able to get the correct answer, it does not end the sense of questioning
to one’s self.
