Hello folks! I’m Paulo Barros and I’m here again for another lesson! We’ve reached lesson
10 of this intermediate course. Welcome back and I hope you are ready for this video
class.

Emma: Thanks! I think that if we moved into a smaller place, it would be great for both of

George: She asks: My boyfriend used to have a lot of money, but now he’s broke. I want to eat
out at least once a week but he doesn’t have enough money for that. What should I do?

Dr. Michael James: Well, I’m sorry to have to say this, but my advice is that you should support
him during this difficult time! Maybe you two should work together to figure out a solution to
this problem!

George: Great advice! Now we’ll move on to our next problem from Denis who is in Sidney,
Australia.

George: He says: My girlfriend doesn’t trust me. She wants to see all my WhatsApp and
Instagram chats. She says she’ll only feel safe if I completely open my life up to her in every way,
including giving her access to my online conversations. Should I allow her total access like that?

Dr. Michael James: No, no, and 1,000 No’s! It's important that in a couple, each person is able to
maintain their own privacy in certain aspects.

George: So we should respect and trust each other enough that our partner can continue
chatting with their friends online, having their own passwords, etc.?

Dr. Michael James: Yes! A healthy relationship ought to include a high level of trust.

That’s great people! Nesse texto vocês viram algumas frases com a palavra: should. Vou
traze-las de volta aqui para analisarmos um pouco mais.

● You should call us right now.

● You should support him during this difficult time.
● You should send us a message by writing to the following e-mail.

Should é um modal verb, ou seja, um verbo modal.

Hoje, iremos aprender alguns verbos modais. Vejam só esta lista que eu preparei para
vocês:

1) Can e Could são verbos modais que expressam habilidades (abilities) e permissões
(permission)

● I can speak English and Spanish. (ability)

● Can I smoke here? (permission)

Can expressa uma linguagem informal e Could bastante formal.

● Can I turn off the TV? (informal sentence used with your family and friends.)
● Could I speak to Mr. Pereira? (formal sentences used with important people.)

Could é o passado de Can.

2) May e Might expressam incertezas, quando nós não temos certeza sobre algo.

● My boyfriend may be here around 7.

 ● I might not come to the meeting tonight.

Ambos expressam incertezas mas might é mais incerto que may.

Normalmente utilizamos may e might para falar do futuro.

● Pollution may increase in ten years.

● Unemployment might go down in Brazil next year.

Você também pode usar o may para pedir alguma coisa a alguém como.

May I come in? - Posso entrar?

May I ask you a question? - Posso te fazer uma pergunta?

Mas isso é uma maneira muito formal de se pedir permissão para alguma coisa.

Must and Ought to expressam obrigações.

● You must arrive at work on time.

● You must not work without wearing a suit.
● Before traveling to the U.S you ought to get a visa.

Utilizamos o Should quando queremos aconselhar alguém, como foi o caso de nosso
diálogo.

● You should arrive at work on time.

● You shouldn’t talk so much at work.

Would é um modal verb que expressa um oferecimento educado, polite.

● Would you like a cup of coffee?

Vejam que poderíamos substituir essa frase por: Do you want a cup of coffee?
A diferença é que quando oferecemos com o Would, tornamos a frase mais educada e
simpática com a pessoa que estamos oferecendo.

Lembrando para vocês que após os verbos modais, utilizamos os verbos na forma base,
sem a preposição (to).

● I can’t talk right now.

● You should write her a letter.
● It may rain today.

Nunca use: you should to write a letter.

Estou aqui, nessa vídeo aula 3 para mostrar que cozinhar é moleza!

Esse diálogo relata a nova realidade da vida de Sarah. Ela está morando sozinha pela
primeira vez, e como marinheira de primeira viagem, está passando por algumas
necessidades básicas de quem vai morar sozinho. Uma dessas barreiras, é cozinhar!
Quem nunca não é mesmo?
Para solucionar esse problema, ela liga para a avó pedindo uma ajuda sobre uma receita
clássica de família.
Ouçam esse diálogo e aprendam a fazer um delicioso Mac and Cheese.

Tina: Hello?

Ethan: Grandma?

Tina: Hello my dear grandson

Ethan: I’m calling you because I want to learn how to make your amazing homemade mac and
cheese dish!

Tina: Oh! That recipe is a piece of cake.

Ethan: As you know, I’m a disaster in the kitchen.

Tina: I know sweetheart, but you are good at so many other things.

Ethan: The last decent meal we had was at a restaurant two weeks ago.

Tina: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Then add milk and cheese, stirring
constantly until the cheese has melted and the sauce has thickened. Put the pasta in a large
casserole dish and pour the sauce over the pasta. Stir well. That’s it!

atenção sobre a composição dessas frases. Okay? Let’s go…

O que todas estas frases têm em comum? [1-2-3]

Isso mesmo! Todas elas começam sempre com um verbo!
Cook - Melt - Add - Put - Stir - Call.
Esse tipo de frase é o que chamamos de Imperativas - Imperative sentences.
Normalmente elas servem para dar ordens.
São usadas também como forma de instruções, por exemplo em uma receita, que devem
ser seguidas, para que tudo de certo.

Vejam como formamos frases negativas na forma imperativa:

● Cook the pasta - Don’t cook the pasta.

● Add milk - Don’t add milk.
● Call me back - Don’t call me back.
A forma imperativa também pode ser expressa com a palavra “Let’s”. Vejam estes
exemplos que eu prazo para você:

● Let’s watch a movie tonight.

● Let’s listen to a song.
● Let’s play a game.
● Let’s eat dinner.

A forma negativa para Let’s é Let’s not. Vejam estes exemplos:

Sempre tomem cuidado, porque a forma imperativa é meio rude e o que você fala, pode
parecer meio bossy (mandão demais).
