ReKEnReKs
These cards are meant to be used with a vis-à-vis marker. You
can use them whole group, as a center activity, or with small
group intervention. For whole group instruction, these cards
can be used for fluency and subitizing practice at the beginning
of your math lesson. Simply flash the card real quickly, and then
ask the class what they saw on the card. Some students may
automatically give you the sum of the top and bottom row. In
this case, I will ask how they knew it was that particular
number. During small group instruction, discuss what number
you see on each row and what total number this makes. I also
like to rebuild the rekenrek using unifix cubes or some other
manipulative. If the rekenrek showed 1 + 3, the students would
use one red cube and three of another color. Students will then
write the number sentence. I have also included a recording
sheet! The students can color the rekenrek to match the card,
and then write the number sentence!
