Safeguarding marriage
as society changes
BY SERENE LUO

A
law that makes sex between men
a criminal offence will soon be no
more.
Known as Section 377A of the
Penal Code, the law was laid down by the
British in the 1930s. While it was one that
reflected the moral attitudes and social
norms of that time, it has in recent years be-
come a controversial law.
On Aug 21, Prime Minister Lee Hsien
Loong announced in the National Day Rally
that “the Government would repeal S377A
and decriminalise sex between men”.
Repealing a law means to revoke or nul-
lify it.
At the same time though, the Govern-
ment intends to keep its “family-oriented
approach”, and “uphold and safeguard the
institution of marriage” by amending the
Constitution.
Read on to find out more about what
this means for Singapore.
