Regular Plural Forms

1. Regular nouns: singular NOUN + -s

2. Nouns ending with ch, x, s, sh, o: singular NOUN + -es


Sg. Pl.

3. Nouns ending with y if a consonant is written before: singular NOUN + -ies


Sg. Pl.
story stories
strawberry strawberries

! If we have a vowel before y: singular NOUN + -s


boy – boys / toy - toys / ray - rays

3. Some nouns ending with f, fe, lf: plurel ending in -ves


Sg. Pl.
wolf wolves
wife wives
life lives

! Exceptions:
cliff - cliffs chief - chiefs safe - safes handkerchief- handkerchiefs

Special Plural Forms


For some nouns the plural form is identical to the singular form:

bison - bison deer - deer


fish - fish moose - moose
series – series species - species
