QUESTION 1 (See example on pages 267 to 269 in the book)

A thin-walled hollow tube AB of conical shape has constant thickness t and average diameters d A
and dB at the ends. Determine:

a) The strain energy U of the tube when it is subjected to pure torsion by torques T.
b) The angle of twist f of the tube.
Note: Use the approximate formula IP = (πd3t)/4 for a thin circular ring.

QUESTION 2 (See example on pages 728 to 730 in the book)

If P = 35 kN, L = 7 m, a = 3 m, and EI = 5.1×107 Nm2, calculate the elastic strain energy of the
prismatic beam.
