CULMINATING ACTIVITY: PARLOR GAMES

As the sun sets over the Philippines, friends and family assemble to play games while laughter
and cheers resound throughout the night. In the Philippines, playing parlor games is a common
past time. Patintero, sungka, and tumbang preso are examples of traditional parlor games played
by Filipinos. In the Philippines, these games have been played for generations and are still well-
liked among young people today. Card games like sakla, panggising, and pikpik, as well as board
games like piko and tong-its, are some of the other common parlor games in the Philippines.
Frequently, people play these games at home, in social settings, or even in public.
FIRST GAME: SACK RACE

What is a sack race?

The sack race sometimes called ‘potato sack race’ is a competitive game in which participants
place both of their legs inside a sack (or pillow case) that reaches their waist or neck. Then they
have to hop forward from a starting point toward a finish line. The first person to cross the finish
line is the winner of the sack race!

SETUP

Before the game begins, designate a start line and finish line, and mark them, so all the players
know where the race begins and ends. Each player must stand before the start line and put both
feet into a sack, and hold onto the sack with at least one hand. They must maintain this position
until the end of the race.

GAMEPLAY

At the start signal, all players jump and hop to the finish line, ensuring to keep both feet in the
sack and at least one hand on the sack.

END OF GAME

The player that crosses the finish line first wins the race!

SECOND GAME: PAPER DANCE

Paper Dance, as the name suggests is a competetion where participants in pairs dance on a piece
of paper until the music stops.

DIRECTIONS

The newspaper is folded in every stop so it gets smaller and smaller with the proceeding rounds.
The simple concept of the event is the team which can endure the difficult and diminishing sheet
till the end without touching the ground, wins the game. And the exciting part of the game is
knowing how they do it.
THIRD GAME: TRIP TO JERUSALEM

The chairs are placed in two rows with the backs against each other. Music is played. As long as
the music is playing, everyone dances around the chairs. When the music stops, all players must
find a seat as quickly as possible. Each round, a chair is removed while the music is playing.
Anyone who can no longer get a seat is out.

GOAL

The aim of the game is to be the last to find a seat on a chair.

FOURTH GAME: STOP DANCE

Freeze Dance/Stop Dance will have the kids jamming throughout the entire game. The players
will dance to music, coming up with their own dances as they go. As soon as the music stops,
they have to freeze, in whatever position they are in. If they move, then they are out. Who can
last the longest.

SETUP

To setup the game, choose the music that will be played during the game. As this is the most
important part of the game, everyone should be involved in the choices. The players should then
choose someone to act as the DJ. Then, the game is ready to begin!

GAMEPLAY

To play the game, have the players spread out in a group and begin to play the music. All of the
players should be dancing. If they are not dancing, then they are removed for the round. At any
point, the DJ may turn the music off. At this point, the players should freeze in their exact
position. If the DJ sees anyone dancing or moving, then they are out! Once the DJ is happy, they
may continue the music. The game continues in this manner until there is only one player left.

END OF GAME

The game comes to an end when there is only one player remaining. This player is the winner,
and they will take over the role of DJ for the next round!
