FORWARD EQUIPMENT COOLING VALVES, OPERATION

PART 1: IN A NUTSHELL ABOUT THE “FWD EQPT VAL” MESSAGE – ATA 21-58
 THE SYSTEM HAS NO DEDICATED CONTROLLER. THE OPERATION IS BASED ON RELAY LOGICS AND SWITCH POSITIONS.
 THE SYSTEM HAS A CARD – M867 – IN THE P50, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR COCKPIT INDICATIONS, SUCH AS “OVHT”, “SMOKE”,
“NO COOLING” AND “VALVE” DISAGREE INDICATIONS ONLY. IT DOES NOT CONTROL ANY OF THESE VALVES.
 THERE ARE SIX VALVES IN THE SYSTEM, ALL OF THEM ARE MONITORED FOR DISAGREE AND THE SYSTEM GIVES US THE SAME
“VALVE” DISGAREE INDICATION. WE HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHICH VALVE HAS CAUSED THE PROBLEM.

 IN “AUTO” MODE THE OPERATION IS A FUNCTION OF:


o AIR / GROUND SIGNAL
o SKIN TEMPERATUE: IS IT ABOVE 49F OR BELOW 41F?
o HOW MANY ENGINES ARE RUNNING? ENG < 2 (1, 0) OR ENG =2

 IN “STBY” MODE THE OPERATION IS FUNCTION OF:


o AIR / GROUND SIGNAL

THESE ARE THE VALVES, THE TITLE OF THE VALVES VARY IN DIFFERENT DOCUMENTS, IT IS BETTER TO CALL THEM BY THEIR EQUIPMENT
NUMBERS;
 V12 – OVERBOARD EXHAUST VALVE
 V178 – INBOARD BYPASS / SHUTOFF VALVE  NO-GO
 V91 – INBOARD SUPPLY VALVE
 V140 – SMOKE CLEARANCE / OVERRIDE VALVE  NO-GO
 V90 – MANIFOLD INTERCONNECT VALVE / 3-WAY VALVE  NO-GO
 V900 – FDARS VALVE (FLIGHT DECK AIR RELIEF SYSTEM VALVE)

 IN “AUTO” AND “STBY” MODES, V12 AND V178 ARE CONTROLLED TOGETHER.

 FOUR VALVES – V12, V178, V91 AND V140 MONITORED BY THE M867 CARD AND THEN THE CARD PROVIDES POSITION DISAGREE
INDICATION TO EICAS AND THE “VALVE” LIGHT.

 THE M867 CARD MONITORS THESE VALVES ON-GROUND ONLY.


 IN-FLIGHT, THE CARD DOES NOT MONITOR ANY OF THESE VALVES.

 TWO VALVES – V90 AND V900 – ARE NOT MONITORED BY THE M867 CARD. THEY REPORT DISAGREE VIA K2197, K2198, K140723 AND
K10725 RELAY LOGIC, DIRECTLY TO THE EICAS COMPUTERS AND THE “VALVE” LIGHT. THIS IS TRUE FOR BOTH ON-GROUND AND IN-FLIGHT
CONDITIONS. REF. SSM 21-58-41.
 IN-FLIGHT, V12 CLOSED POSITION SWITCH IS MONITORED VIA K200 AIR/GND AND K1008 RELAYS. REF. SSM 21-58-01.
 IN “AUTO” MODE, TWO VALVES, V90 AND V900 CHANGE THEIR POSITIONS DURING CLIMB AND DESCENT. THIS CAN HELP T/S.
 IN “AUTO” MODE, SKIN TEMP. ABOVE 49 ̊F, V12, V178 AND V91 CHANGE THEIR POSITIONS ON THE GROUND, DURING THE SECOND ENGINE
START AND UPON ARRIVAL AT THE FIRST ENGINE SHUTDOWN.
 IN “AUTO” MODE, SKIN TEMP. BELOW 41 ̊F, ONLY V91 CHANGES POSITION. THIS CAN HELP T/S.
BY SWITCHING FROM “AUTO” TO “STBY” OR “OVERRIDE” POSITION, YOU CAN EXCERCISE THE VALVES AND THEIR POSITION SWITCHES AND CONTROL
CIRCUITS.
 THERE ARE THREE APPLICABLE MEL ITEMS;
o MEL 21-58-07-02-01 V12 DEACTIVATION: CLOSED LOCKED, SHORTING PLUG INSTALLED.
o MEL 21-58-08-01-01  V91 DEACTIVATION: CLOSED LOCKED, SHORTING PLUG INSTALLED.
o MEL 21-58-15  V900 DEACTIVATION: CLOSED LOCKED, SHORTING PLUG INSTALLED.
THE PROBLEM IS, BEFORE YOU APPLY THE MEL, YOU MUST TROUBLESHOOT AND IDENTIFY THE FAULTY VALVE(S). IN THE MEL KIT YOU CAN FIND
SHORTING PLUGS TO INHIBIT THE MESSAGE AND THE LIGHT.

 THE DEACTIVATION SHORTING PLUGS CAN BE USED TO VERIFY THE FAULTY VALVE OR VALVE CIRCUIT; V12, V91 AND V900. (V91 AND V178 ARE
INTERCHANGEABLE.)
 THE OPEN AND CLOSED POSITION SWITCHES OF THE VALVES PROVIDE GROUND SIGNALS WHEN THE VALVE IS IN THE OPEN OR CLOSED POSITION.
CHECK FOR GROUND SIGNALS, OR LACK OF GROUND SIGNALS.
 IN THE MEC, INSIDE THE P36 PANEL YOU CAN FIND THE CONTROL, TIME DELAY, POSITION INDICATION AND POSITION DISAGREE RELAYS. VIA THE
SPECIFIC RELAY SOCKET YOU CAN CHECK THE POSITION SWITCH OF A SPECIFIC VALVE.
