Route Curves

Description of the Course

Design and layout of horizontal and vertical curves, line grade, earthwork
volumes, theory of location as applies to highways and railways, mass diagram, overhaul
and estimate of cost.

Objective of the Course

Know the methodologies of carrying out the more common surveys and
investigations such as horizontal and vertical curves, line grades, earthworks and theory
of locations as applied to highways and railways, mass diagram and overhaul.

Description of the Course

This course deals with the development of highways in the


Philippines, highway design, and the materials that are used in road construction and
maintenance. The course includes highway administration; traffic, driver, pedestrian and
vehicle characteristics; geometric design, roadside design, highway and related
structures; intersection, interchanges, terminals, drainage structures and traffic
engineering.

Objectives of the Course

After completing the course, the student must be able to


1. Discuss the highway development in the Philippines
2. Be familiar with the items involved in the highway design using the standard
specification for public works and highways.
3. Identify materials used in road construction and maintenance.
4. Use the methods of analysis and design relevant to highway engineering.

1. The highway and its development


2. Highway functions, roadway design, driver and vehicle characteristics
3. Highway geometric design, cross-sections of typical highways, road shoulder, cut
and fill slope, road alignment, design speed, horizontal alignments, super
elevation, vertical alignment, sight distance, widening of curves, transition curves,
intersection and interchanges
4. Highway materials. Soil types, soil characteristics and classification, bituminous
materials.
5. Design of highway pavements

Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Cotangent, Secant, Cosecant
Trigonometric functions of 45°, 30°, 60°, 0°, 90°
Include: a.) ratio & proportion; b.) Pythagorean Theorems
II. THE RIGHT TRIABGLE
Solution of a right triangle
- to learn how to use the calculator to obtain values of trigonometric
functions.
- Solve problems on right triangle

III. FUNDAMENTAL RELATIONS AMONG THE TRIGONOMETRIC


FUNCTIONS
Simple identities, Identities from the Pythagorean Theorem, Verification of
Identities, Basic processes used to form identities

IV. GENERALIZED TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS


Angles and rectangular coordinates, Definition of the trigonometric functions of
any angle, Trigonometric functions represented by directed line segments,
Expressing a trigonometric function of any angle as a function of an acute angle,
Functions of negative angles and angles increased by 90°, Functions of k90°±A, k
an integer, The solution of trigonometric equations
- determine the trigonometric functions of special angles
- determine the trigonometric functions of a directed line segment
- express the trigonometric function of any angle as a function of an acute
angle

V. OBLIQUE TRIANGLE
Sine law, cosine law, tangent law, case I, case II, case III, case IV, the half-angle
formulas.

VI. GENERAL FORMULAS


The addition/subtraction formulas, Proof of the addition formulas, addition
formulas for the tangent, the double-angle formulas and the half-angle formulas,
conversion formulas.
VII. VECTORS
Addition and subtraction of vectors, component of a vector. Resultant of vectors.

VIII. GRAPHS OF TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS


Radian; Length of circular arc; Graph of y = sin x, y = cos x, y = A sin (kx + Φ),
y= cot x, y = sec x, y =csc x
