Rusting of Metals

I. Voltmeter Ranking
Complete the table below first before answering the other questions. Express all answers in FOUR decimal places. Spell
out ordinal numbers in CAPITAL LETTERS. Misspelled answers are wrong. (example: FIRST) Please show all pertinent
computations. (1-12, 2pts each with correct solution; 13-18, 1pt each; total: 30pts)

1. How many volts is (1)? 0.9567 10. How many volts is (10)? 0.0493
2. How many volts is (2)? 0.2833 11. How many volts is (11)? 0.0306
3. How many volts is (3)? 0 12. How many volts is (12)? 0.0416
4. How many volts is (4)? 0.5033 13. Rank of (13) SIXTH
5. How many volts is (5)? 0.7533 14. Rank of (14) SECOND
6. How many volts is (6)? 0.8567 15. Rank of (15) FIRST
7. How many volts is (7)? 0.0252 16. Rank of (16) THIRD
8. How many volts is (8)? 0.0153 17. Rank of (17) FOURTH
9. How many volts is (9)? 0 18. Rank of (18) FIFTH

HOW TO SOLVE:

Use the following formula to solve for the unknowns:

1𝑠𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 + 2𝑛𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 + 3𝑟𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔
𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 = ( )
3
𝛴(𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 − 𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒)2
𝑆𝐷 = √
3−1

For the ranking, the metal with the lowest “average volts” value will be FIRST. The metal with the highest value for the
“average volts” will be the SIXTH.

II. Galvanic Coupling

Use your answers in the previous table to complete the table in this section. Determine which metal will turn pink during
galvanic coupling. Please copy the table in your answer sheets then write the letter of your answer corresponding to each
number in the table. (15pts)

(1) (6) (11)

a. Black Panther a. Captain Marvel a. Superman

b. Magneto b. Black Panther b. Iron Man

(2) (7) (12)

a. Superman a. Captain Marvel a. Wolverine

b. Magneto b. Superman b. Iron Man

(3) (8) (13)

a. Wolverine a. Captain Marvel a. Wolverine

b. Magneto b. Wolverine b. Black Panther

(4) (9) (14)

a. Iron Man a. Captain Marvel a. Wolverine

b. Magneto b. Iron Man b. Superman

(5) (10) (15)

a. Captain Marvel a. Black Panther a. Black Panther

b. Magneto b. Iron Man b. Superman

HOW TO ANSWER:

The metal with the lower voltmeter ranking (based on the table on the first part of the quiz) will be the metal that will
turn pink in the galvanic coupling. For example, for number 1, Black Panther has an average voltmeter reading of 0.2833
while Magneto has 0.9567. Between Black Panther and Magneto, Black Panther will turn pink because it has lower average
voltmeter reading in comparison with Magneto’s.

Flexing Analysis

Determine if the FLEXURAL STRESS of the chocolate will increase, decrease, or will not change (no change) if changes are
made in the chocolate’s dimensions. Express your answers in the third column as whole numbers or fractions. If no change
will be expected in the flexural stress, answer 1 in column 3. Two examples have been given. (1-5, 1pt each; 6-10, 2pts
each; total: 15pts)

Legend: Initial Dimensions: Lo, To, Wo

Initial Load: Po

FLEXURAL STRESS

(1) decrease (6) 1/3

(2) decrease (7) 1/2

(3) decrease (8) 1/16

(4) no change (9) 1

(5) decrease (10) 8/25

HOW TO SOLVE:

Compare the increase/decrease of the original flexural stress value (𝞂o) with the resulting flexural stress (𝞂) after applying
the changes in the dimension of the formula.

Nuclear Chemistry

Solve the following problems in a clean sheet of paper. DO NOT ROUND OFF COMPUTED VALUES UNTIL THE FINAL
ANSWER. Enclose all final answers in a box.

I. Substance D initially weighs 56 grams. After 6 minutes, it was observed that its mass decreased by 12 grams. What
is its half-life in hours? Express final answer in four decimal places. (5pts)

Given: Ao = 56 grams
@t= 6 minutes, An = 56g – 12g = 44g
(An is the remaining substance D after 6 minutes. Since its mass decreased by 12 grams, the remaining mass (An) would
be the original mass (Ao) minus 12g.)
Req’d: t1/2 in hours
An
ln (Ao) = -k*t
44g
ln (56g) = -k*(6 mins)
k = 0.0401936761/min
Substitute the k value in this eq’n:
ln 2
𝑘
= t1/2
ln 2
0.0401936761/min
= t1/2
t1/2 = 17.24518002 mins
The problem requires the half-life in hours:
1ℎ𝑟
𝑡1 = 17.24518002 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑠 ∗ ( )
2 60𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑠
𝑡1 = 0.2874 ℎ𝑟𝑠
2

II. The initial amount of the radioactive material V in a rock is determined to be 6.78 mg. Only 1.46 mg are left of V
after 1002 years. How much of the radioactive material, V, decayed after the aforementioned 1002 years if the half-
life of V is 452.3055 years? Express your final answer in four decimal places and in milligrams (mg). (5pts)

Given:
Ao = 6.78mg
An = 1.46mg @t= 1002 yrs
𝑡1 = 452.3055 years
2
Use the An and the Ao values given, then compute for the amount of V that decayed.
Amount of V decayed = Ao – An
Amount of V decayed = 6.78mg – 1.46mg
Amount of V decayed = 5.3200 mg
