I. Answer the following problem.(5 pts each)

Direction: Write your answer at the back.

A. A machine in a soft drink manufacturing plant is designed to dispense 12 ounces of a

carbonated drink into tin cans. However, it is known that the amount of drink that the machine
dispenses into a thin can is normally distributed with a mean of 12 ounces and a standard
deviation of 0.015 ounce.

1. If a can of soft drink is randomly chosen from the manufacturing process, determine the
probability that the can:
a. Contains anywhere from 11.97 to 11.99 ounces of drink.
b. Contains at least 12.025 ounces of drink.
2. If a delivery truck contains 1,000 cans of the soft drink, around how many cans will contain
between 11.97 and 11.99 ounces of drink?

B. IQ is known to be normally distributed with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.

a. MENSA is an organization composed of individuals with high IQs. If the minimum IQ

requirement for membership is 138, what percent of the population are eligible?
b. Persons with an IQ of at least 150 are considered to be gifted. What percent of the
population would be considered gifted?
c. Between what IQ levels will the middle 80% of the population lie?
d. What are the IQ levels of the top 5% of the population?
e. What are lowest 10% of all IQ levels of the population?

C. The weights of the students in a certain year level are normally distributed with a mean of 60
kg and a standard deviation of 3.5 kg. Find the probability that a student randomly selected
from this group weighs less than 55 kg.
D. Let X be a normal random variable with mean 𝜇 = 550 and a standard deviation σ=150. Find
the probability that X will have a greater value than 600.

II.

The number of items sold per day at a retail store with its corresponding probabilities is shown
at the table below. Determine the mean, variance and standard deviation of the probability
distribution.
