MADNESSTECHNICAL REPORT

Carla Lopez
INTRODUCTION

The project seeks to create a family of chess pieces that maintain their

own recognizable characteristics but that do not cease to be part of the

family they are part of. The challenge is approached from the materiality

and the way in which the figures portray hierarchy

My approach to the subject was madness, so the figures I make are irregu-

lar and heterogeneous giving more freedom to the material and restricting

the control of the result. Under the conceptualization of madness as being

all over the place.

MATERIALS

CLAY

Useful when creating small size pieces because of its malleability and

resistance when drying. thus giving the possibility to create shapes with

greater freedom and obtain a clean finish.

heterogeneous porous material

High Heat resistance over 900ºC

Yield Strength : 1-10 MPa

Plastic deformation: moderated

Water absorbent

Density: 1.200 y 1.800 kg/m³

Tensile Strength: 10 - 5 x 105 Pa

Hardness: depending of the amount of water

flexural strength0,1 - 1 MPa

Thermical insulator

Low termical expansion

BEE WAX

melted crayon made of beeswax and vegetable dye was applied on top

of the figures. This material is useful for its versatility and lack of control.

Water-insoluble

Melting Point 62-65°C

Yield Strength : 4-6 MPa

Shear Stress: 0.1-0.3 MPa

Plastic deformation: Low

Density: 950-980 kg/m³

Tensile Strength: 10 - 5 x 105 Pa

Hardness: 1-10 MPa

flexural strength: 0,1 - 1 MPa

Low termical expansion
