METHOD BOOK CURRICULUM Name: Peyton Barrett

6TH GRADE
Title of Method Habits of Musicianship

Why?
After reading the provided intro statement, I can’t help but think there could be any other
proper way to teach band. In contrast to every other book (Standards of Excellence, Sound
Innovations, etc.) this book puts being a musician on your instrument first, and reading
exercises second, which I think is fantastic.

In what way would you

utilize? For at least the beginning of the year, I believe this book could essentially just be “band” as
it includes exercises that develop at a very steady pace in my opinion, making it so (in
theory) the pieces the book expects your students to play will always be what they are ready
to play, and ask for the level of musicianship they know how to provide.

7TH GRADE
Title of Method Accent on Achievement (Book 2)
Why? I believe once the instrumental fundamentals have been achieved, it is important for students to
have a traditional method book with them! I chose this one in particular as it features doable yet
hallenging rhythms that can be clapped, sung, or played, as well as colorful illustrations and lots
of concise but useful information to aid students!

In what way would you I believe starting class with a warm-up sequence (possibly by rote) followed by method book
utilize? work would be my personal preferred way to go. Perhaps it could even be fun to put a little
“Best-Of” collection of tunes from this book as part of the concert setlist.

8TH GRADE
Title of Method Accent on Achievement (Book 2)

Why? I chose this for essentially the same reasons I would choose to use it with my 7th-grade
class. Depending on the group of students, there’s a good chance some exercises would be
too difficult the previous year, meaning they have a chance to continue trying as their skills
continue to grow. Also, for cost purposes, I don’t believe it is necessary to ask families to
buy a new book that will realistically only be used for a maximum of nine months.
In what way would you I would use this book in many of the same ways I did the previous year, however likely
utilize? being more particular with musical expectations and focusing on what could be seen as the
more challenging exercises. (as long as they match the skill level of the group)
