METHOD BOOK CURRICULUM Name: Carter King

6TH GRADE
Title of Method Standards of Excellence Vol. 1

Why?
In my opinion, Standards of Excellence is an incredibly summative and comprehensive book for
both the student and the teacher. The teacher edition of the method book is incredibly
informative, containing information on tuning tendencies, problem spots on all of the
instruments, step-by-step setup instructions, and a myriad of other teaching resources that are
extraordinarily helpful for a first-year teacher. The exercises in the book are both interesting and
paced well, scaffolding material on top of itself in a nature that is both pushing the musician but
also allowing them time to learn.
In what way would you I would utilize this method book heavily in a beginning band class. Using the teacher edition would
utilize? provide excellent resources for getting students started on their instruments. I would branch away
from the book later in the year to start focusing on other repertoire, but the book would be the
basis for any learning.

7TH GRADE
Title of Method Standards of Excellence Vol. 1 / Vol. 2
Why?
For 7th Grade, I would want to continue some exercises from the tail-end of the first volume
Of Standards of Excellence and continue work into the second volume. With Standards being
used the year before, it is only natural to continue with the second volume. Standards of
Excellence offers such a great teacher version that helps with all things associated with
setting students up for success that I’m sure the second volume only amplifies that.

In what way would you At this point, I would want to start veering away from using strictly the method book and
utilize the method? place more of an emphasis on repertoire, but I would still use the second volume sparingly
during the school year.

8TH GRADE
Title of Method Standards of Excellence Vol. 2

Why? Standards of Excellence Vol. 2 has some great ensemble exercises towards the tail end of
the book as well as the great director resources mentioned earlier. These exercises build upon
fundamentals established in volume 1 and can work as great sight reading exercises or
warm-ups.
In what way would you In the eighth grade, I would want to focus almost entirely on repertoire and stray even
utilize the method? further from the method book. However, I believe there is still great material in the Standards
of Excellence book that can be used for sight reading and warm-up purposes.
