Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

Identify and Segregate Wastes

Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. identify waste by categories according to industry standards and environmental

legislation:
2. perform waste segregation according to organization requirement; and
3. sort wastes into labelled containers

Let’s Recall (Review)

Directions: Give examples of biological and hazardous waste. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

Biological Waste Hazardous Waste

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Proper Waste Management for a Greener Environment Advocacy
Increasing population and industrialization would also mean more wastes in the environment. More
waste, more diseases. But then, there would also be a positive effect of increasing population, we could also
help each other. Hand in hand for a better, cleaner and greener environment for us people to stay and live
with.
We are going to discuss the proper waste disposal. Proper waste disposal is important to both rural and
urban areas. We the citizens of our community are the responsible one to take care of our environment.
Undeniably; most of us do not protect our environment but rather; we cause destruction of it. Proper waste
disposal is one of the ways that we can help to clean our environment. First step to have a proper waste
disposal is waste segregation. Waste segregation is important to our environment. It is segregating the bio-
degradable from non-biodegradable. It helps our environment to look cleaner and greener. Improper waste
disposal could cause disasters such as floods and diseases. Here, in Philippines, we encounter massive
floods not only because of typhoons but also because of improper waste disposals. have a lot of scenarios
that we encountered massive flood not only because of typhoon but also because of improper waste disposal.
Student volunteers have their clean up drive to collect garbage washed ashore by the typhoon surge brought
on by monsoon rain at a bay in Paranaque city, metro Manila August 25, 2012 (Romeo Ranoco/Reuters) . It

is one of the evidences that we, people, do not have the discipline on managing our wastes that result on
killing people, plants and animals and also to the destruction of our mother earth.
Republic Act No.9003 also known as the Ecological Waste
Management Act of 2000, it is hereby declared the policy of the
state to adopt a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid
waste management program. This law intends to reduce garbage
while putting up a competent recycling based-management system
in the country.

Moreover, it is then stated in the Section 10 of this act that “Pursuant to the relevant provisions of R. A. No.
7160, otherwise known as the Local government code, the LGUs shall be primarily responsible for the
implementation and enforcement of the provisions of this Act within their respective jurisdictions.” Our local
government units (LGUs) are responsible for enforcing the law. Government agencies on the national level
are required to support LGUs in carrying out this responsibility. LGUs are thus required to draw up a solid
waste management plan; local government units are mandated to implement proper solid waste
management.
What is Waste Segregation?
Segregation of our waste is essential because the of amount of waste being generated today causes
immense problem. There are certain items that are not Bio-Degradable but can be reused or recycled in fact
it is believed that a larger portion of the waste can be recycled, a part of can be converted to compost, and
only a smaller portion of it is real waste that has no use and has to be discarded.
Household waste should be separated daily into different dustbins for the different categories of waste such
as Wet & Dry Waste which should be disposed of separately.
Wet wastes, which consist of leftover foodstuff, vegetables, peels etc. should be put in an organic waste
converter -My Green Bin and compost can be used as manure in the garden.
Dry waste consisting of cans, aluminum foils, plastics, metal, glass and paper could be recycled.
One should also keep a dustbin for toxic wastes such as medicines, batteries, dried paints, old bulbs and
dried shoe polish.
Waste Can be segregated as
Bio Degradable Waste
Bio Degradable waste includes organic waste, e.g., kitchen waste,
vegetables, fruits, flowers, leaves from the garden and paper.

Non Bio Degradable Waste

Non-Biodegradables can be further segregated into:
A – Recyclable Waste- Plastics, Paper, Glass, Metal Etc.

2
B- Toxic Waste: Old Medicine, paints, Chemicals, bulbs, Spray Cans,
fertilizer and pesticide containers, batteries, shoe
polish.

C- Soiled: – Hospital waste such as cloth soiled with blood and other body
fluids. Toxic & soiled waste must be disposed of with utmost
care.

THE COLOR CODING OF WASTE BINS

Proper Waste Segregation & Disposal

1. Preparation
Before you can begin to segregate and dispose of your waste, you must first determine if your waste meets
the guidelines for the definition of a solid waste in Section 261.2 of the Resource Conservation and Recovery
Act, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In general, most solids, liquids and gases are
considered solid waste.
2. Identification and Segregation
Once your waste meets the definition of solid waste, you must then determine if it meets the definition of
hazardous waste under Section C of the RCA. While every material considered hazardous is listed under
Section C, dangerous waste usually displays the characteristics of flammable, corrosive, reactive or toxic,
according to the EPA. Be sure you know how your hazardous waste mixes. Two different wastes can often
react to form explosions or dangerous vapor.
If you waste meets the definition of hazardous waste, then you need to isolate it from any municipal waste
you have and prevent it from entering the municipal waste system. Then you must apply for a permit to treat
and dispose of the waste, usually through a state health office. This includes tracking your waste and
recording waste levels, according to the EPA.
3. Disposal
If your waste is not hazardous, then you can choose to recycle it or enter it into the municipal waste stream.
Most MSW is stored in landfills or simply burned, according to the EPA.
Once ready for disposal, you must decide on a proper method. Incineration treats and eliminates biological
waste, thus a very popular choice. Hazardous liquids are often stored in underground injection wells. Metals
and other materials that does not burn easily may have to be stored in drums in a landfill.
4, Considerations
3
Consider recycling waste or reducing the amount of resources you consume. This helps the environment and
prevents potential health hazards in waste streams. Syringes are commonly thrown out into the MSW stream,
often injuring or infecting waste workers, when many places offer to dispose of them for free. Buy products
that use less packaging, such as open-air fruit and economy size goods. Start a compost instead throwing
out yard waste.
