Pre-Calculus Checklist from Chapter 1

The following is a list of key material you’re expected to know from highschool…it’s
review, so it won’t be covered in class, but it’s fundamental knowledge that you must have
before entering the course, and you ARE responsible for it. If you need more practice,
check out the given links and/or try the homework exercises below. Up to you how much
you do here, but please make sure you get as much practice as you need!

1.1: REVIEW OF FUNCTIONS

 I know the definition of a function, and how to evaluate a function; Overview / Video
 I understand how to represent a function and convert between different representations,
and what the Vertical Line Test means; Functions and Vertical line test Overview
 I know how to find the domain and the range of a function; Videos
 I understand the concept of symmetry (e.g. is 5sin(x) + 2 an odd or even function?);
monotonicity, and periodicity. Video
 I am able to find the domain of functions that have been combined (added, multiplied,
etc); e.g. I can find the domain of f ( x)  x  5  x  2 Video 1 / Video 2
 I know how to find the composition of functions and the associated domain. E.g. if
f ( x)  x 2  1 and g ( x)  sin( x) , then I could find g ( f ( x)) and its domain Video

Section 1.1: 9, 17, 29, 45, 51 [If you feel you need more practice, any odd-numbered question
from # 1 - 55 is doable]
1.2: BASIC CLASSES OF FUNCTIONS

 I know what the graphs of simple functions (x2, x3, ex, 1/x, ln(x), sin(x), etc.) look like.
Overview
 I am able to set up and solve problems using various mathematical models (e.g. if it costs
$50000 to operate a factory each year plus an additional $20 for each table produced, and
meanwhile the tables are sold for $200, I can find the number of tables that must be sold
each year to break-even.) Video
 I know how to apply and interpret transformations of functions (vertical and horizontal
shifts, stretching/compressing, reflecting) …e.g. I can graph -3sin(2x)+5 Shift
Transformation Video / Stretch Transformation Video / Shift and Reflection Video

Section 1.2: 91, 95, 103 [If you feel you need more practice, any odd-numbered question from #
59 - 111 is doable.]

1.3: TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

 I am able to convert between radians and degrees; Video

 I know how to represent angles on the unit circle (e.g. I know where 720o lies)
Overview
 I understand the interpretation of sine and cosine on the unit circle (i.e. sine is the vertical
component; cosine is the horizontal component); Sine and Cosine Overview
 I know the definition of tan, cot, sec, csc in terms of sine and cosine; Definitions
 I have memorized the trigonometric values of special angles (0, 30, 45, 60, and 90
degrees) and their equivalents in all 4 quadrants. Special angles Overview

bacteria double every 3 hours, I could find the function for the number of bacteria at any
time. Video
 I have an understanding of the logarithmic function and its relation to the exponential
function; Overview
 I am comfortable applying logarithm laws e.g. I could simplify
