1-D, steady heat conduction, resistance networks, critical insulation thickness
1-D, steady heat conduction with heat generation in different geometries
Heat transfer from extended surfaces (Fins)
2-D, steady heat conduction, Laplace equation, Principle of superposition
Unsteady heat conduction, lumped capacitance, semi-infinite and plates, Heisler’s charts
Radiation heat transfer
Basic concepts in radiation, Relevant surface properties, Role of medium, Planck’s Equation, Stefan-
Boltzmann Law, Wien’s displacement law, Solar radiation, Black, grey and real bodies
Radiation exchange between black bodies, concept of view factor, view factor calculations, reciproci-
ty and summation rules
Radiation exchange between grey bodies, radiation exchange between infinite parallel plates, con-
cept of radiation shields
Concept of radiosity, radiation net works

Convection heat transfer
Basic concepts, Newton’s law of cooling, Convective heat transfer coefficient, Temperature and ve-
locity fields, Classification of convection problems
Derivation of mass, momentum and energy equation in 2-D, forced convection
Concept of velocity and thermal boundary layers, Boundary layer equations in 2-D, forced convection
Laminar flow over a flat plate, Blasius solution, Use of integral method
Turbulent flows, Heat transfer analogies
Forced convection heat transfer over bluff bodies, boundary layer separation, correlations
Forced convection heat transfer through internal conduits, developing and fully developed flows, fluid
flow and heat transfer correlations for internal flows
Heat transfer in natural convection, Boussinesq approximation, correlations for flat plates, cylinders,
spheres etc.
Introduction to boiling and condensation heat transfer, Use of correlations
Heat transfer equipment
Introduction to heat exchangers, classification, recuperative vs regenerative heat exchangers
Simple analysis of heat exchangers, design vs rating problems, use of LMTD and  - NTU methods

Highlighted part may be covered after heat exchangers are taught
