Research question CLEAR
What affect does caring the parents have on the young caregivers?
Introduction
In considering different perspectives and viewpoints on causes, consequences and
possible courses of action, there are large numbers of people who provides cares
unpaid to their parents. According to the American Association of caregiving youth,
about 1.4 million children between ages 8 and 18 are caregivers nationwide. (2015)It
shows that large number of children who are facing on caring to their parents, who
should be focusing on their study and school activities. Additionally, according to Lisa
Esposito, who has been a patient advice reporter for the American news since 2014,
says that kids take on a wide range of responsibilities such as shopping, fixing meals and
households tasks, or keeping the family member company. (2015) It results that young
caregivers are spending so much time on caring them instead of studying and it affects
their performances in school or their free time.
Cause 1
The statistics as presented by BMC UK official website would suggest that the cause of
having many young caregivers is a single parent. The report, which comes from the
organization from US experts with many experiences states that Providing extended
and/or short-term care to an aging or sick parent or assisting with the care of neighbour
or friend is a reality for about 50 million Americans.(2009) It shows that there are so
many of them who are facing on caring single parents in a country. These statistics
clearly underline the scale of the problem because even though only in one country,
there are so many people who are taking care of their parents. Therefore, I believe that
the cause of having young caregivers is a single parent.
Cause 2
The statistics as presented by BMC UK official website would suggest that the cause of
having many young caregivers is living with the parents who have illnesses. According to
the official Germany nursing Science website, more than half of young carers live with
single mothers who predominately suffer from chronic somatic diseases. (2013)
Additionally, according to the article, which is written by Contemporary School
Psychology, states that a good number of children grow up in households where a
parent has been diagnosed with medical chronic illness. (2017) These statistics clearly
show that children turn into a young caregiver when the parent has a medical issue, and
the support is required. Therefore, I believe that the cause of being a young caregiver is
having a parent who has illness.
Consequence 1
Consequence 2
The statistics as presented by UK caregivers experts suggest that the consequence of
young people caring their parents is having an impact on their mental health with many
responsibilities. According to The childrenssociety which established in UK and supports
children’s mental or do donation, says that young carers often say how stressed and
tired they are, as they find it hard to juggle their home lives with school, collage or a
job. Additionally, they also state that their own physical health was ‘’ just okay’’, whilst
38% reported having a mental health problem. (2018) These statistics clearly show that
providing care to their parents has a negative affect on their mental health, and they
should not take all the responsibilities if it has such a big impact on their development.
Therefore, I believe that the consequence of being young caregivers is affecting their
mental well-being due to a lot of responsibilities.
