Rules:

Assessment tasks that are completed in class

Tests completed in class, such as tests and examinations, practicals, performances,
speeches, presentations must be completed on the designated day. Failure to do so
requires adequate evidence (Medical Certificate or a letter from a parent attached to
an ‘Illness and Misadventure’ form) to be presented to the Head of Department in the
next lesson of that subject.

Assessment tasks that are completed outside the classroom

Tasks completed outside the classroom are to be submitted by the designated due date
and time as specified on each task notification. Tasks are to be submitted by the date
and time specified on the assessment task notification. All tasks may be submitted
early.

Late submission of tasks

Any task submitted after the designated day and time will be deemed to be late, unless
the student has been granted an extension (which students must have applied for to the
relevant Head of Department using the ‘Application for Extension’ form at least two
days prior to the due date), or is absent on the day due to illness or another acceptable
reason, as indicated in a Medical Certificate or a letter from a parent attached to an
‘Illness and Misadventure’ form given to the Head of Department in the next lesson of
that subject.
Failure to submit a task on time will result in a mark deduction as follows:

One day late: 10% of total marks

Two days late: 20% of total marks

Three days late: 30% of total marks

Four days late: 40% of total marks
Five days late: 50% of total marks
Six or more days late: 100% of total marks
For tasks that have not been given approval for extension over a weekend or holiday
period, non-school days do accumulate towards percentage penalties imposed eg.
lateness after a weekend will accumulate a 3-day penalty (30%).

Malpractice – Plagiarism and Collusion

All assessment tasks completed at school or at home must be the student’s own
work. If any malpractice is proven, the task concerned will score zero. Allegations of
malpractice will be investigated by the Head of Department of the faculty concerned.

Failure of computer equipment is NOT an acceptable reason for non-submission

and will incur a penalty if submitted late. Your teacher will advise of the submission
format for the task. If your task requires printing, it is our duty to have this ready before
the due date of the task.

Task:

Context:

Students have begun reading John Boyne’s novel ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’.
Our Literacy Development programme involves the use of hierarchies of thinking in
response to texts.

Key Concept/Big Idea:

Students respond to a narrative extract using a hierarchy of thinking encapsulated in the
ALARM comprehension model.

Task:

Students will be asked to read and think about a specific chapter of the class
novel, Chapter 7.

In class, students will answer FIVE questions on Chapter 7 using the ALARM
model of reading and responding. This model depends on the differentiation
of reading by specific VERBS. See the chart below.

The class will practice this style of comprehension using a similar set of
questions on Chapter 6. That practice activity will demonstrate the marking
allocation.

Instructions.
Write your name on your answer paper.
If you do not understand something, put up your hand and ask your teacher
politely.
Words in blue can be found in the verb charts above.
The questions are based on Chapter 6 of your novel. You may have your
novel with you as you answer the questions.
Write your answers legibly, and in sentences, on the lined paper provided.

Questions.

1. On the first page of Chapter 6, Bruno is lying on his bed, looking at the
ceiling. Identify a contrast he makes between Out-With and his old home
at Berlin by writing out the relevant sentence. 2 marks

2. Describe Bruno’s attitude to Out-With. Give three pieces of evidence

from the first three pages of Chapter 6 to support your description.

4 marks

3. Explain the quoted line, found on the fourth page of Chapter 6. What
figure of speech is being used, and what is Bruno referring to? Use
evidence from the chapter for your ideas.

“If you ask me, we’re all in the same boat. And it’s leaking.” 4 marks

4. Towards the end of the chapter, Maria argues that Bruno must be
obedient. She says, “Bruno, if you have any sense at all, you will stay
quiet and concentrate on your school work and do whatever your father
tells you… It is not up to us to change things.”

Is Maria’s advice justified? Why/why not? Give evidence from the

chapter for your ideas as you write in your own sentences.
(Analyse, justify) 4 marks

5. In what ways is an appreciation of this chapter important for an

understanding of human complexity? You might like to consider what we
learn about Maria, Gretel and Bruno’s father, as well as what we learn
about Bruno. (Appreciate) 6 marks
