SOLEMNITY OF THE
ASSUMPTION OF MARY

The ASSUMPTION of the BLESSED VIRGIN

MARY is a Catholic Church Dogma that the
Virgin Mary "HAVING COMPLETED THE
COURSE OF HER EARTHLY LIFE,
WAS ASSUMED BODY AND SOUL
INTO HEAVENLY GLORY."
Things to know and share
about the Assumption:
• Assumption came from the word:
ASSUMPCIOUN which means TAKING UP
INTO HEAVEN.
• It was an ancient feast from the Eastern Church
which they called THE DORMITION OF THE
MOTHER OF GOD.
• From the East, it was brought to the
Western Church, and it was only celebrated
in the 8th CENTURY by POPE SERGIUS I,
which was called ASSUMPTION OF THE
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY.
• The Assumption flourished as part of the
CULT OF MARY during the MIDDLE
AGES.
• It was only on NOVEMBER 1, 1950, that the
Assumption of Mary was defined as a
Dogma of Faith by POPE PIUS XII through
the Apostolic Constitution
MUNIFICENTISSIMUS DEUS.
• The 1854 Dogma on the IMMACULATE
CONCEPTION, was used as a basis on the
Dogma of Mary's Assumption.
• The celebration of Mary's Assumption is a
SOLEMNITY, and a VIGIL MASS must be said
on the evening of August 14.
ASCENSION is different from ASSUMPTION.
CHRIST by His own power ASCENDED INTO
HEAVEN;
MARY was ASSUMED or taken up into Heaven
by God, and not under her own power.
The CHURCH of San Fernando,
Pampanga was founded in 1754
by the AUGUSTINIANS
and it was dedicated to the
NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA
ASUNCION (Assumption).
 On DECEMBER 11, 1848, when San Fernando
was created as a new DIOCESE, the Parish of the
Assumption was elevated as the CATHEDRAL OF
THE ASSUMPTION. On OCTOBER 1, 1981,
Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz elevated the Cathedral
into a METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL having
SAINT FERDINAND as its TITULAR SAINT and it
was placed under the PATRONAGE of OUR
LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION.
