1. An electric heater when connected to a 110V source draws a current of 5A. Answer the
following.
a) What is the power dissipated (in W) in the heater?(1 mark)
b) What current (in A) will the heater draw when connected to 220V source?(1 mark)
c) What is the power dissipated (in W) in part (b) when connected to 220V source?(1
mark)

Solution

We are given, potential difference between the heater terminals, V = 110 V,

Current drawn by the heater, I = 5 A.
According to Ohm’s law, R = V/I = 110 / 5 = 22 Ω.

a) Power dissipated in the resistor = V2/R = 550W.

b) When the potential difference is increased to 220 V, the current is given by

V/R = 220 / 22 = 10A.

c) The power dissipated in the heater in part (b) = V2/R = 2200W.

2. The filament in a lamp has a resistance of 90 Ω.

a) How much current flows through the lamp when it is connected to 110 Volts?(1 mark)
b) How much power (in W) is dissipated as heat in the resistor?(1 mark)

Solution

a) I = V/R = 110 / 90 = 1.22A.

b) Power dissipated =V2/R = 134.44W.

3. A heater coil ‘A’ takes 12 minutes to heat a certain quantity of water and increase the
temperature by 10oC. Another coil ‘B’ takes 7 minutes for the same. How long (in
minutes) would it take to achieve the same temperature rise if both coils are immersed in
water together?(2 marks)
Solution will be given separately for better understanding of all possible
ways of solving this question.

4. A 12 V battery has a rating of 30 Ah.

a) What's the energy stored by this battery in Wh?(1 mark)
b) How long (in hours) can this battery deliver a constant current of 5 A?(1 mark)

Solution

a) Energy stored in the battery = 12V x 30Ah = 360Wh.

b) The duration for which the battery can deliver 5A = 30Ah / 5A = 6 hours.

5. A 6V battery has a rating of 300 Wh.

a) What's the rating of the battery in Ah? (1 mark)
b) What is the value of the constant current(in A) that this battery can deliver if it is
continuously used for 25 hours?(1 mark)

Solution

a) The rating of the battery = 300Wh / 6V = 50Ah.

b)Constant current = 50Ah / 25hours = 2A.

6. A 1.2V battery has a rating of 3000mAh. The battery is connected to a device with a load
resistance of 200 Ω.
a) How much current(in A) flows in the circuit? (1 mark)
b) Estimate how long (in hours) this battery can sustain this current.(1 mark)

Solution

a) The current flowing in the circuit, I = V / R = 0.006A=6mA

b) The duration for which the battery can sustain this current
= 3000mA / 6mA = 500 hours.

7. I am using my Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro (5020 mAh) for the live streaming of a certain
event wherein the camera is actively recording the event, screen is ON for the display,
microprocessor and other ICs are active for the communication purpose. The event lasts
for half an hour. Assume the mobile has 60% charge at the start of streaming. Following
are the values of current each of the components draw
★ Camera (342 mA)
★ Display (196 mA)
★ Microprocessor and other ICs (227mA).
a) How much charge (in mAh) is drawn from the battery?(1 mark)
b) What percentage of charge will be left after the streaming of the event?(1 mark)
c) What is the maximum duration (in hours) of the event that is sustainable by this
battery?(1 mark)

Solution
a) Current drawn=(342+196+227)/2 =382.5 mA.
Charge drawn(in%) =(382.5/5020 )X100=7.6%
b) 7.6 % is lost
So charge left=52.4%
c) Maximum duration of the event sustainable by the battery
=5020mAh/(342+196+227)=5020/765=6.56 hours

8. A 3.7V, 1100mAh Nokia battery and a 3.7V, 1560mAh iPhone5s battery both are charged
from 40% to 50% by the same charging source.
a) Find out which model (Nokia or iPhone) takes more time to charge. (1 mark)

b) If charging time for Nokia is t1 and that for iPhone is t2,Find t1 / t2 (2 marks)
Solution

a)From the given rating of the two batteries obviously the iPhone takes more time to
charge.
b)If charger is providing Current I,

We have
IX t1=10% of 1100mAh=110mAh
IX t2=10% of 1560mAh=156mAh.
t1/t2=110/156=0.705

9. A flash of lightning carries 8C of charge, which flows for 0.02s.

a) Calculate the current (in A) in the lightning bolt.(1 mark)
b) If the voltage is 10MV, calculate the energy in Mega Joules transferred between cloud
and ground.(1 mark)
Solution

Charge moved, Q = 8C
Time taken, t = 0.02s

a) Current, I = Q/t = 8 / 0.02 = 400A

b) Potential difference = Work done / charge moved
Hence, work done = potential difference x charge moved = 10 × 106 × 8
= 80 × 106 J
Energy transferred = work done = 80 × 106 J=80MJ
