SRC calls for urgent donations from students of IIUM !
On the 26th December, a massive
wave caused by an earthquake deep under
the ocean floor off the coast of Acheh prov-
ince on the northern Indonesian island of
Sumatra, shook southern Asia. It triggered a
tsunami that killed thousands of people in
Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Ma-
laysia, Myanmar, Maldives, Bangladesh and
Somalia. It was the largest quake in the
world since 1964.

In realizing that this is a part of our respon-

sibility, SRC together with International
Student’s Office (ISO), Sultan Haji Ahmad
Shah (SHAS) Mosque, all Kulliyyah Based
Society (KBS) and student volunteers from
the countries affected by the quake ,work
hand in hand to help the victims in order to
lessen their difficulties.

Starting from 27th December 2004 until 4th

PTPTN - UNSOLVED ISSUE
Last weekend (25th December),

session of the Student’s Representative Council

4. IIUM FINANCIAL LOAN
Eligible candidates: Muslim and full time
students of IIUM who meet these require-
ments:
Must not receive any other scholarship/loan
Priority is for Non-Malaysian students,
however, Malaysian students may apply on
case-to-case basis.

month of every regular semester.
Attach together with the form relevant sup-
porting documents. Closing date for application
is at the end of the second month of every regu-
lar semester.

Patience is a part of virtues that
are emphasized to be possessed by human
being. Having patience is a sign of a good
Muslim. Patience indeed let the persua-
sion of one soul as well as to having calm-
ness whenever facing trial and tribula-
tions. Thus, when we are in a state of tran-
quility, we are able to think and decide the
best solutions for every trials occurred. In
many verses in Al-Quran, Allah promises
rewards for those who stays in patience.
Be sure We shall test you with some-
thing of fear and hunger, some loss in
goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil)
but give glad tidings to those who pa-
tiently perseverance.
(Al Baqarah: 155)
Dilemma-in-the-Elevator
There has been a number of reports
made by the students of Kulliyyah of Eco-
nomics and Management Science regarding
the elevator predicament there. The elevator
is supposed to be able to take up to 20 per-
sons per ride but the problem arises when it
refuses to do so. In several occasions, the
elevator would show signs of being over-
loaded but there were only 6 persons in it.
The dexterity provided by the university is an
essential form of facility for the campus com-
munity. Due to this, steps like upgrading the
service of the elevator and constant check-
ups should be given to curb this matter for
the betterment of everyone.
Threats still lurk
on the road
In the last issue of SRC Highlights, we have
reported about the dangers the holes in front
of Mahallah Uthman and the Male Sports’
Complex pose to the community of IIUM.
Concerned, the authority has taken some
actions to get to the bottom of that issue.
However, the actions taken are not appropri-
ate as it creates another problem. The author-
ity has filled the holes with stones but as they
were not properly tarred, the stones which
were meant to cover the holes, are now lying
dangerously on the roads. This is dangerous
to vehicles as the sharp surfaces of the stones
may cause tires to deflate which may of
course, lead to accidents.
Therefore, we advise the authority
to quickly tar the road to avoid any unwanted
accidents. We thank the authority for being
concerned with the safety and welfare of the
students.
Failure is a familiar term that is
much related with the value of patience.
People are used to feel disappointed and
upset when they failed in performing their
duties. Sometimes, failure may lead peo-
ple down with a feeling of loss and hope-
lessness. As a result, they may do some-
thing which is harmful such as commit-
ting suicide.
Patience actually let people into
thinking of the consequences of being a
failure, hence it leads us to be steadfast in
our daily life. By believing in God, we are
actually in a state of gratefulness and then
we will feel that God has never left us.
The trial came in many types, either
through happiness or sadness. Then, for
those who are patience, they will be aware
that all of the tribulations faced has its
own wisdom.
12th Mathematical Sciences National Symposium
Last 23rd to 24th December 2004,
Department of Computational & Theoreti-
cal Sciences, Kulliyyah of Science (DCTS,
KOS) and Persatuan Matematik Malaysia
(PERSAMA) organized the 12th Mathe-
matical Sciences National Symposium at
CAC, IIUM. It was a series of the now
annual event. This time around, the empha-
sis was on the role of mathematical sci-
ences in the development of biotechnology
and k-economy. It provides a forum for
national and foreign mathematical scien-
tists as well as inviting interested industri-
alists and entrepreneurs to discuss related
issues. As usual it also provides the oppor-
tunity for researchers to present their latest
findings in the broad field of mathematical
sciences.
The Rector of IIUM, Prof. Dr.
Mohd Kamal Hassan has been appointed
as the Patron; Prof. Dr. Torla Haji Hassan
as the Advisor while the chairman is Prof.
Dr. Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin. The sym-
posium official language is the Malay lan-
guage but, the usage of the English lan-
guage is also allowed.
Themed “The Role of Mathemati-
cal Sciences in the Development of Bio-
technology and k-economy”, this sympo-
sium’s objectives were to gather and de-
velop a network of national and foreign
mathematical scientists, to provide the
opportunity for researchers to share their
latest ideas and research outputs, and to

He is the only one who knows what is
best for us. Indeed Allah will never bur-
den us with something which does not suit
to our capability. Always be patient and
believe that Allah might keep something
better for us in future. Be patient; be firm
because Allah is The Most Knowing and
Merciful.

President and Chief Executive Officer,
MIMOS Berhad, KL; Prof. Nasir Ganik-
hodjaev Department of CTS, Kulliyyah of
Science, IIUM; and Prof. Dr. Fatkhullah
Kh. Abdullaev, Physical-Technical Insti-
tute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences
Uzbekistan & Research Centre of IIUM.
Participants were satisfied with
the outcome of the event. They hoped that
this event will continue to benefit them in
the future.

Community service in Kota Damai
The IIUM Paramotor Team was established
in July 2003 following a demonstration and
a visit from the President of Persatuan Lun-
cur Udara Paramotor Malaysia, Lt. Col.
Basir in order to encourage the participa-
tion of youth in this sport. Initially, there
were six students who registered to join
Inter-Mahallah Cultural Week 2004 - “COLOURS OF THE UMMAH”
Marvelous!! That’s the first
thing in mind if someone asked me about
The Inter-Mahallah Cultural Week which
had been going on from 20th of December
until 27th December 2004. “Colours of the
Ummah” is the theme for this second Inter–
Mahallah Cultural Week after the first one
which was been held early this year. This
programme was fully organized by Mahal-
lah’s Representative Committee (MRC).
The objectives of this programme
were to appreciate the uniqueness of Is-
lamic adaptation in different ethnicities in
both local and international, to encourage
the students to come out and perform their
talents with confidence, to cultivate the
tradition of knowledge and to inculcate the
preservation of Islamic value as the basis of
humanity in building a better community,
and to highlights new talents in different
parts of cultural activities.
During the competition, the venue
for the sisters and brothers were separated.

this team. Now, there are ten students, in-
cluding four sisters who are in this team.
According to Bro. Mahathir, the
team went through an intensive training to
prepare themselves mentally and physically
the main auditorium and at the experimen-
tal hall for the brothers.
Every competition was judged by
3 different juries. Some of the juries were
from various departments such as IRKHS,
Economics, and not forgetting from
CELPAD as well.
All mahallat were competing with
each other in many different contests which
were busana fashion show, pantomime,
drama, singing, dancing, also sirih junjung
and artwork competitions. It ended with the
glorious Closing Ceremony on the 27th De-
cember.
The closing ceremony was at-
tended by VIPs, including the Rector, the
Dean of Architecture, Director of Students
Office and Principals. The event was
launched by our beloved rector Prof. Dr.
Kamal Hassan. The night then started off
with a gimmick and selected performances
by students and after that the prizes and
souvenirs were given to the winners. Ma-
hallah Siddiq and Halimah were pronounce
as overall winners for male mahalah and
female mahallah respectively. The cere-

can be considered as a high-risk sport even
though Alhamdulillah, there were no seri-
ous injuries involved ever since they joined
the team.
Next, this team will attempt to
break the world record of 700 km. They
plan to fly from Perlis to Johor next year.
They also hope to be able to attend the
World Air Games in France next year.
Therefore, in order to make sure that their
mission will be successful, they need a lot
of support from the university and also
from other government or private bodies.
For now, they have received support from
Youth and Sports Ministry, Majlis Perban-
daran Selayang, private companies and also
the university.
They also wish to attract more
youths to join this activity. As for now, this
IIUM team is the only student-oriented
team in Malaysia. They also hope to popu-
larize this sport because there are now only
approximately 100 pilots involved in this
sport.
On behalf of the SRC, we would
like to congratulate the team for their admi-
rable success. We hope that more success
will grace the team. Insya-Allah.

rules and regulations of this competition
which have to be obeyed by the contestants.
Others are, while doing the drama and pan-
tomime, the participants must use Arabic or
English language only, but for other con-
tests, they can choose either one, or use
malay language, example for dancing com-
petition and their performance must hold
Islamic value in it. Marks were given ac-
cording to the proper language the partici-
pants are using, the proper attire they are
wearing, their expression, and team work.
They are also bonus marks for groups
which are participated by at least 3 interna-
tional students.

ample, had been organized by Mahallah
Bilal, Safiyyah, Hafsa, and Mahallah
Asma’.
