The Human Mining Guild

Far towards the Rim from Cetra and even further rimwards still from Cori Celesti lies the city of
Concordia, the capital, and only known city, of the Human Mining Guild. As one of the younger races,
relatively little is known of the HMG and its people, and even less is known of the city itself due to their
insular tendencies and self-sufficient nature, leading to a lack of trade with other cities and cultures.
However in recent years, more and more citizens of the HMG have been seen in other cities, sporting
their mechanical devices and impressive facial hair, leading some scholars to believe that there has been
a push from within the HMG to extend their reach to their surroundings in an effort to share their
knowledge and expertise, and in return, learn what they can from other cultures to add to the vast
libraries in the vaults of Concordia.

The People
The History of Concordia and the HMG
While many believe that Concordia was founded by the HMG, it in fact predates the HMG by many
hundreds of years. According to Concordian scholars, the city once was a staging ground for expeditions
into the desert and the lands surrounding, and so has always had a population of inquisitive, erudite and
adventurous people. The name ‘Concordia’ itself means ‘a great plain’, a name referring more to its
surroundings rather than the actual settlement itself, however since its establishment, nobody has ever
felt the need to change the name and so the city itself has become synonymous with the surrounding
arable area.
To an outsider, the city itself may not seem like much, even to the point that a passerby may even
wonder why it’s referred to as a city. The urban area itself covers approximately 2 circular miles on the
surface, with the surrounding land and circular miles being taken up by farmland that appears far too
vast to be managed by such a comparatively small settlement. However, on closer inspection, one would
find the farmland serviced by an intricate system of irrigation that appears to spring from the ground
itself.
The system on the surface gives only a hint of the intricate network of tunnels and infrastructure

Coinage
To facilitate the ease of trade, the HMG uses the standard P/G/E/S/C system used elsewhere on the
Disc, however as a result of their deep knowledge of minerals and the mining and refining thereof, as
well as strict sanctions on diluting the metals themselves, Concordian-minted currency is famous for its
purity and has been known to garner more than its worth in certain areas of the Disc.
That having been said, under the governance of a Corporate Republic, everything is assigned a value,
whether as standardised by the Board of Economics, or on an individual basis, meaning that while
standardised currency is used for outside trade, internal trade is often a barter system with goods and
services being exchanged for an equivalent amount, however that equivalent amount can often simply
be standard currency if one party has interests outside the limits of Concordia.
This can often lead to misunderstandings when lifetime residents of Concordia venture out to other
cities and societies, expecting their goods and services to be appropriately valued, and taking offence
when they are offered rates far below what the BoE has declared.
