Volume of a cylinder
A cylinder is a prism with a circular cross-section. The volume of a prism is given by:
E.g. 1 Using the formula for the prism, write down the formula for the
volume of a cylinder whose radius is r and whose height is h. r
h
2
Working: Area of cross-section = πr
So V = π r 2 h
Volume of a cylinder, V = π r 2h
E.g. 2 Calculate the volume of a cylinder whose height is 10 cm and whose diameter is 12 cm.
Give your answer in terms of π.
E.g. 3 A gold cube of side 5 cm is melted down to form a cylinder whose height is 3 cm. Find the
cylinder’s radius.
E.g. 4 Using the diagram below, find a formula for the surface area of a cylinder.
r
h
= + +
Working: The length of the rectangle is equal to the circumference of the circle.
Surface area = Area of circle + Area of circle + Area of rectangle
= π r2 + π r2 + 2π r × h
= 2π r 2 + 2π rh
E.g. 6 A cylinder has total surface area of 110π. Find its height given that its radius is 5 cm.
E.g. 7 A label is to cover the curved surface of a baked beans tin. The tin has a diameter of
74 mm and a height of 115 mm. Given that the label will overlap by 1 cm, find the area of
the label in:
(a) mm2 (b) cm2.
