Light and Ventilation
Master Plan
- Visual representation of conceptual ideas supported by
mathematical calculations aimed at giving convenience and
comfort to the users or occupants
- MASTER PLAN OF A HOUSE OR ANY STRUCTURE is the designer’s
prescription based on the wants and needs of the client
Good or Sound Plan
- Those that are functional and economically designed adhering to
the principles of “form follows functions” (Louis H. Sullivan).
Sound Planning Considerations
1. Distribution
o Placement, location, and arrangement of each room unit
in relation with each other as to functions and
coordination.
 Think which space should be placed near what
space.
 Ex: interrelation between dining and kitchen. This
primarily requires accessibility to food servicing.
These two should not be far from each other.
2. Circulation
o Traffic is also present inside the building and therefore
needs to be considered.
o Circulation and movement of the occupants in the
building should not be hampered by any obstacles nor be
detoured as a result of poor planning.
 Circulation and distribution: pag di maganda yung
placement, affected yung circulation.

o There is no substitute for a good daylight and fresh
natural air entering and circulating inside the building.
o Artificial lighting and ventilation is very costly to those
who cannot afford, but others prefer it for maximum
comfort regardless of costs.
o The design depends upon the likes and preferences of the
owner.
 Consequence of fully-ventilated residence: costly,
unhealthy (breathing our own breath, and dry
skin), unsafe (during emergencies. You’ll make
sure that your house is fully-sealed. So you won’t
be able to hear what happens outside).
 Natural light is relaxing to the eyes. It keeps us
alive.
o National Building Code of the Philippines Section 808.
Window Openings: “Rooms intended for any use, not
provided with artificial ventilation system, shall be
provided with a window or windows with a total free area
of openings equal to at least 10% of the floor area of the
room, provided that such opening shall not less than 1.00
sq. meter. However, toilet and bathrooms, laundry rooms,
and similar rooms shall be provided with window or
windows with an area not less than 1/20 of the floor area
of such rooms, provided that such opening shall not be
less than 240 sq. millimeters. Such window or windows
shall open directly to a court, yard, public street, or alley,
or open watercourse.”
