Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION
Summary:
● Basic concepts
● Thermodynamic properties
● Ideal gas law
4
1.1 THERMAL ENGINEERING
● Thermal engineering = thermodynamics + heat transfer
● Thermodynamics: science of energy. All aspects of energy
and energy transformation (mostly between heat and work)
● The 1st law of thermodynamics: conservation of energy principle
● The 2nd law of thermodynamics: energy has quality, quantity,
and actual processes occur
10
● Thermodynamic processes:
● Reversible process
● Irreversible process
12
1.4.1 HEAT ENGINE
● Work can always be converted to heat
directly and completely, but the reverse is
not true → require special devices, called
heat engine
● Heat transfer from high-temperature medium
to low-temperature one; work done
● Working fluid receives heat 𝑄1 (or 𝑄𝑖𝑛 ) from
hot source → expands → partial heat
transforms into work 𝑊; remain heat named
waste heat 𝑄2 (or 𝑄𝑜𝑢𝑡 ) releases to low-
temperature sink (cold source)
● 𝑄2 ≠ 0
● Energy conservation 𝑄1 = 𝑄2 + 𝑊 (1.5)
● Thermal efficiency
𝑊 𝑄1 − 𝑄2 𝑄2
𝜂= = =1− (1.6)
𝑄1 𝑄1 𝑄1
13
1.4.2 REFRIGERATOR AND HEAT PUMP
● Heat transfer from a low-temperature medium to a high-
temperature one; work absorbed
● Working fluid (called refrigerant) receives heat 𝑄2 from cold source
and external work 𝑊, then “releases” heat 𝑄1 to the hot source
● Energy conservation 𝑄1 = 𝑄2 + |𝑊| (1.7)
● Coefficient of performance COP
● COP of a refrigerator (hệ số làm lạnh)
𝑄2 𝑄2
𝐶𝑂𝑃𝑅 = 𝜀 = = (1.8)
𝑊 𝑄1 −𝑄2
15
1.4.3 FORMAL SIGN CONVENTION
● Heat transfer (𝑄) to a system, and work
done (𝑊) by a system are positive
● Heat transfer (𝑄) from a system, and work
done (𝑊) on a system are negative
18

cho nguồn nóng
19
Ex. 1.3: A household refrigerator with a COP of 1.2 removes
heat from the refrigerated space at a rate of 60 kJ/min.
Determine the electric power consumed by the refrigerator;
and the rate of heat transfer to the kitchen air
● Power input to refrigerator
20
Additional materials
22
1.5 PROPERTIES OF A SYSTEM
● Any characteristic of a system is call a property, such as
pressure, volume, temperature, density, internal energy,
enthalpy, … by which its physical condition may be
described
● Primary or intensive properties (independent of total mass):
pressure 𝑝, temperature 𝑇, density 𝜌
● Secondary or derived or extensive properties (dependent of total
mass): volume, weight, energy, enthalpy, entropy, …
● Secondary properties are not measured directly; but
determined from primaries properties
● Extensive properties per unit mass are called specific
properties (lowercase letters)
● Specific volume 𝑣 = 𝑉/𝑚; Specific total energy 𝑒 = 𝐸/𝑚; …
23
1.5.1 TEMPERATURE
● Temperature 𝑇 (𝐾): a physical quantity that expresses
quantitatively the perceptions of hotness and coldness. Theo
thuyết động học phân tử thì nhiệt độ là giá trị động năng trung
bình của các phân tử.
● Nhiệt độ bách phân (Celcius), ký hiệu ℃
● Thang nhiệt độ: 0 ℃ điểm nước đá đang tan, 100 ℃ điểm nước sôi,
tất cả ở điều kiện áp suất tiêu chuẩn (760 mmHg)
● Nhiệt độ tuyệt đối (Kelvin), ký hiệu 𝐾
𝑇 𝐾 = 𝑇 ℃ + 273.15 (1.11)
● 0 𝐾 = −273.15 ℃ ≈ −273 ℃ ; 𝑇 𝐾 ≥0
● Nhiệt độ Farenheit, ký hiệu ℉
5
𝑇 ℃ = 𝑇 ℉ − 32 (1.12)
9
● Nhiệt độ Rankine, ký hiệu °𝑅
24
1.5.2 PRESSURE
● Pressure is defined as a normal force exerted by a fluid per
𝐹𝑛
unit area 𝑝 =
𝐴
● Unit: 𝑁/𝑚2 , 𝑃𝑎, 𝑘𝑔/ 𝑚𝑠 2
● 1 𝑃𝑎 = 1 𝑁/𝑚2 ; 1 𝑏𝑎𝑟 = 105 𝑃𝑎
● 1 𝑎𝑡𝑚 = 101325 𝑃𝑎 (atmospheric pressure)
● 1 𝑎𝑡 = 98066.5 𝑃𝑎 (atmosphere technical)
≈ 0.981 ∙ 105 𝑃𝑎
● 1 𝑚𝐻2 𝑂 = 9806.65 𝑃𝑎 = 0.1 𝑎𝑡
1
● 1 𝑚𝐻𝑔 = 13.6 𝑚𝐻2 𝑂 = 𝑎𝑡𝑚 = 103 𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑟
0.76
25
● Absolute pressure 𝑝𝑎𝑏𝑠 , 𝑝𝑡 : measured relative to absolute
vacuum
● 𝑝𝑎𝑏𝑠 ≥ 0
● Local atmospheric pressure 𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑚 = 101325 𝑃𝑎
● Gage pressure 𝑝𝑔𝑎𝑔𝑒 , 𝑝𝑑 : measured relative to the atmosphere
● 𝑝𝑔𝑎𝑔𝑒 = 𝑝𝑎𝑏𝑠 − 𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑚

𝑚
● Density: mass per unit volume 𝜌= (𝑘𝑔/m3 )
𝑉
● At 4℃: 𝜌𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 1000 𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
● At 15℃; 1𝑎𝑡𝑚: 𝜌𝑎𝑖𝑟 = 1.225 𝑘𝑔/𝑚3
● Liquid: pressure & temp have only a small effect on 𝜌
● Gas: both pressure & temp have a strong influence on 𝜌
27
1.5.4 INTERNAL ENERGY
● Internal energy 𝑈 (𝐽) or 𝑢 (𝐽/𝑘𝑔) = sum of all the microscopic
forms of energy
● Internal thermal energy
● Others (chemical, nuclear) → not change
● Only consider internal thermal energy 𝑢 = 𝑢 𝑇, 𝑣
● Internal kinetic energy: associated with molecule movement,
depends on temperature 𝑇
● Internal potential energy: depends on molecules distance or
specific volume 𝑣
● For ideal gas 𝑢 = 𝑢 𝑇
