Indefinite Articles - a , an
Definite Articles - the

Indefinite Articles - 'a' and 'an'

1. We use 'indefinite' to mean 'not sure' or 'not certain’. When we are

talking about one thing in general, we use 'a' or 'an'. Indefinite
articles are used before singular countable nouns.

She made a resolution to work harder at school.

My brother received a toy truck for his birthday.
She had an ice cream after lunch.

2. Whether we use 'a' or 'an' depends on the sound that begins the
next word (the word that comes after 'a' or 'an').
singular noun beginning with a consonant sound -
a book, a camera, a desk, a university, a unicorn, a union

singular noun beginning with a vowel sound -

an apple, an eel, an igloo, an owl, an urn, an hour, an heir
3. If an adjective comes between the article and the noun, you need to
listen to the initial sound of the adjective before you can decide whether
to use 'a' or 'an'.

a bad apple a broken egg

an honest man
an unusual tradition
an eager beaver

4. Remember that you cannot use 'a' or 'an' with plural nouns
because 'a' and 'an' means 'one' or 'a single’.
