“What Happened to Monday”

The movie I chose to review is “What happened to Monday”. I was in high school when I first
watched this movie and since then it became one of my favorite movie of all time. It’s because it really is
an interesting one, it tells the story of seven identical sisters and their battle for survival in a world
where a global one-child policy is strictly enforced. Thus, it is the kind of movie which I would highly
recommend to watch.

The movie is set in the year 2073 and the world is reeling from overpopulation. To combat the
problem, the Child Allocation Bureau, headed by Nicolette Cayman played by Glenn Close, is established
to ensure that the new policy for all families to only have one child is enforced. As part of the policy,
siblings are listed and put into cryo-sleep until the overpopulation is resolved where they are expected
to wake up to a world they deserve. However, Terrence Settman played by Willem Dafoe, grandfather of
identical septuplets named after each day of the week, has found a way to keep all of his grandchildren
by assigning them specific days of the week to go out as one individual, Karen Settman played by Noomi
Rapace. When the eldest sibling Monday, fails to return at the end of her day, her siblings try to solve
the mystery and save her before the bureau finds out that there are actually seven of them.

There is no dull moment in this movie once the action kicks in and a full onset attack is launched
against the sisters. The movie was very challenging to have a single actress play seven personalities that
make up the main character. However, Noomi Rapace the main character manages to pull it off with
flying colors. The overall performance of this movie including the characters, cinematography etc are all
well executed, its brilliance relies on the choice of an engaging lead actress of course like Noomi Rapace
to provide the acting and action in equal measure. Thus, kudos to the director who was Tommy Wirkola,
the writing team of Max Botkin and Kerry Williamson for this fast-paced script, the movie would not
have been as amazing without the amazing execution.

In conclusion, what happened to Monday in the ending part maybe because she fell in love and
she was pregnant. I would like to believe that Monday still loved her sisters, but that the love for her
child and her love of Adrian led her to make a desperate choice. In some ways this could be seen as a
parable about how people frequently turn their back on their families when they fall in love. No matter
how much you may love your family, falling in love with someone frequently means choosing your new
family over your old family. And Monday fell in love. And while Adrian fell in love with Monday, he
wanted to love her every day.
