The Context
▪ In 2022,the Emergency Event Database EM-DAT recorded 387 natural
hazards and disasters worldwide, resulting in the loss of 30,704 lives
and affecting 185 million individuals. (Reliefweb.int, 2023).

▪ Economic losses totaled around US$223.8 billion.

▪ Heat waves resulted in over 16,000 excess deaths in Europe, while
droughts affected 88.9 million people in Africa.
▪ Hurricane Ian single-handedly caused damage costing US$100
billion in the Americas. (Reliefweb.int, 2023)

Framework of Humanitarian Supply Chain

Among the major disasters, the 2004

Improving the management and coordination of
humanitarian logistics with stakeholders (response agencies Future Research
/ NGOs) is imperative due to its socio-economic implications
and the need for urgent response to disasters. and Managerial
Implications
The literature on the role of ports is sparse, further research
is required on relief management. Humanitarian logistics
should become a discipline and a concept that is more
broadly understood and known in society in order to have a
broader impact.

Policy makers should consider incorporating ports into

disaster risk management strategies in the disaster
management framework of mitigation, preparedness,
response and recovery to improve last mile logistics for
relief distribution.
